Prime Lambs
The weekly sale of Prime Lambs at J36 had an entry of 1236 lambs forward selling to more demand than expected, with an overall market average of 213p/kg. The sale today saw well finished lambs with weight in strongest demand, as J36 continues to offer a very good market for the well finished, heavy weight lambs.
Handy weighted lambs saw them best types regularly sell in excess of 250p/kg with well finished, better bred lambs, still easily selling in excess of 220p/kg. Light weight lambs were short in number today with 34kg Texels out of Mules selling to £81 from Hornby Hall farm Penrith.
The consignment from DM & D Cook, Ulverston led the way selling Suffolk lambs to £130 with others to £129.50 from the same home. This was closely followed by Texel lambs selling to £128 from JB Airey, Kendal with his consignment of Texel lambs averaging £121.02. The consignment from M Allen, Carnforth peaked at £122. Beltex lambs topped at £121 from J BL & I Ellis, New Hutton.
There were plenty of pens of heavy well-fed lambs easily selling towards the one hundred and twenty mark. The top pence per kilogram this week came from JG & PH Thompson, Selside selling Beltex lambs to 257p/kg and 250p/kg. Heavy weight hill bred lambs saw Cheviots sell to £107 from J Allonby & Son, Grayrigg with Mules selling to £105 from WP Brewer & Sons, Bleasdale.
Cast Sheep
A nice entry of 530 cull ewes forward today, which once again all sold to a competitive trade, with strength and meat selling to a massive premium today. A run of wonderful Texel ewes from R Wilson, Appleby sold to a top of £136 with others selling to £135 from the same home and other Texel ewes selling to £133 from R Batty, Selside.
Pure Suffolk ewes sold to a top of £133 from Messrs Ellwood, Grizebeck with others selling to £132 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe. Many of the best Continental ewes were regularly selling between the £120 – £130 mark with the next level down selling either side of £100.
Mule ewes continue to be eagerly bid for with the best selling well over the £100 mark, toping at £107 twice from WR Clarke & Partners, Yealand Redmayne and JW Robinson & Son, Farleton. Many feeding type Mule ewes were forward today with these regularly selling between the £55 – £65 mark.
Cheviot ewes once again topped the hill section selling to £92 from G GU & D Swarbrick, Meathop with Rough Fells selling to £84 from TLB & J Knowles, Selside. A bigger show of Swaledale ewes were forward with a top of £72 from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale with others selling to £70 from JW Thwaites, Greenholme with medium type Swaledale ewes with meat, selling between the £40 – £50 mark.
A small show of cast rams were forward with Leicesters leading the way at £122 from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale, with Charollais selling to £116 from J & L Tyson, Milnthorpe.
