J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Show & Sale of Continental Store Cattle, Fortnightly sale of Calves, Stirks & OTM Cattle, 16th September 2021

CALVES & STIRKS

Beef bull calves saw a top price of £560 achieved for a British Blue x from WH Kitching & Sons, Helsington, with other strong British Blue bull calves selling to £490 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth and £480 from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. Younger rearing calves today made up the bulk of the sale with Angus x calves selling to £375 from RJ Holden, Broughton in Furness. Limousin x to £370 from B&MJ Nelson & Son, Heversham and Hereford x to £270 from J Hornby & Son, Stank.
Dairy bull calves sold to an exceptional top price of £400 for EW & RM Towers, Hornby. The sale comprised of predominantly younger calves which saw Swedish Reds selling to £195 from EW & RM Towers Hornby, Fleckviehs to £190 from RJ&JA Clark, Endmoor, Montbeliardes to £180 from Messrs Sowerby, Drybeck, Holstein Friesian selling to £175 from Whitestone Farm, Newby and £150 from J Hornby & Son, Stank.
Heifer calves were in short supply today, however those forward attracted keen interest. British Blues led the way selling to £510 from WH Kitching & Sons, Helsington, with S Proctor, Selside achieving £490 and Gibson & Berry, Endmoor selling the best of their run to £465. Younger heifer calves sold to £300 from S H & PI Bowes, Stainton with other Limousin x selling to £270 from JG & BJ Escolme, Killington. Native sired heifer calves sold to £250 for Aberdeen Angus calves from EW&RM Towers, Hornby with Herefords to £190 from J Hornby & Son, Stank.
Another large entry of weaned calves and stirks sold to the continued high levels of demand, with Limousin x steers selling to £820 and £810 from A Taylor & Sons, Eyemouth. Aberdeen Angus steers sold to £710 from BJ&MJ Tomlinson, Salwick. Younger steers generally sold £420-£550.
Several bull stirks today forward selling to £760 for a British Blue x from J&M Brakewell, Kirkby in Furness. Other bulls sold to £760 for British Blue x from A Guy, Calder Vale. With younger bulls generally around £440-£620.
Heifer stirks sold to a top price of £760 from A Guy, Calder Vale with heifer stirks predominantly 4-6 months old selling to £600 from BJ&M Tomlinson, Salwick, £550 for British Blue x from R Greenwood, Skipton with others to £440 from S Pye, Chipping.

STORE CATTLE

The catalogue entry of 570 store cattle, which saw a full ring side of buyers in attendance. The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Jonathan Beresford who we thank for his time and expertise. We would also like to say a big thank you to our sponsors BB Dairy Ltd and the North West Limousin Club. We like to take this opportunity to thank all the vendors for the quality of cattle put forward to the show, after much time and deliberation he awarded the champion rosette to the first prize Limousin bullock from FI&ME Little, Barrows Green which went on to top the market, selling to £1640. The reserve champion rosette was given to the first prize Limousin heifer from GH Jones, Far Sawrey who sold to £1380.

Out side the show, trade was buoyant from start to finish, with all vendors leaving happy with their days trading. Limousin bullocks sold to a top of £1460 from MA&JA Winn, Burneside. British Blue heifers at 10-month-old from AT Rogerson, Chipping sold to £1410. Strong well finished cattle saw marvellous returns with Aberdeen Angus heifers from JW&HM Metcalfe & Son, Gatebeck selling to £1400. Yearling cattle once again would be the trade of the day with the best end bullocks regularly selling between the £1200 and £1300 mark, with a top of £1350 from MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell who also sold a lovely Limousin heifer at the same age to the same price. The best end yearling heifers saw a keen interest from purchasers, which were regularly selling to the £1080-£1150 mark. The next level down yearling heifer sold to the mid to late nine hundred.

OTM CATTLE

Another strong trade for all classes of cull cows, with an overall market average of 141p/kg. The sale peaked at 207.5p/kg for a young Limousin cow from R H M & S Boyren, Colton who sold others at 189.5p/kg. Other heavy beef cows regularly sold between 140p/kg and 160p/kg, depending on age and quality. Beef cows saw a top price of £1352 and £1330 achieved from R H M & S Boyren, Colton who sold others at £1295. A large entry of dairy cows forward today with Holstein Friesian selling to 164.5p/kg from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal, with others to 157.5p/kg from JJ&MA Park & Son, Sizergh whom also sold Montbeliardes at 137.5p.kg and Fleckviehs at 129.5p/kg. Dairy cull cows sold to a top price of £1237 for a heavy weight Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal who sold others at £1230, closely followed by Messrs Sowerby, Drybeck achieving £1158. Other heavy and well fleshed dairy cows regularly sold between £950-£1020. British Blue x cows sold to £1107 from S Proctor, Selside with native bred cows selling to £1027 for Aberdeen Angus x from TJ&K Beaty, Windemere.
OTM heifers today sold to a top price of 187.5p/kg for Hereford x from RJ&J Gardner, Kendal who sold others at 184.5p/kg. Dairy heifer sold to 174.5p/kg for Holstein Friesian from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg. The top grossing OTM heifer today was £1263 from RJ&J Gardner, Kendal.

The next sale of cattle at J36 is on Thursday 30th September, this sale will include the monthly sale of beef breeding cattle.
