The first pig sale of September saw an increased entry in all sections, with all pigs selling to full value, inline with other national sales where the pig market is reporting downward pressure. The sale commences with prime pigs which saw a top price of £126 achieved for Pietrain x Duroc boars from G Hargreaves, Lancaster with Duroc x Saddleback gilts from J&L Tyson, Carnforth selling at £115. Other prime pigs generally selling at £95-£108 depending on weight and finish, with buyers once again showing preference towards gilts and castrated males. A top p/kg of 313 was achieved by G Hargreaves, Lancaster this time selling Pietrian x Duroc gilts, with White gilts and boars generally selling at between 98-105p/kg. An increased entry of cull pigs saw sows sell to £125 from TA & DH Knipe, Ulverston with cull boars selling to £105 from G Hargreaves, Lancaster. Top p/kg for cull sows was 58p/kg for heavy weight Large Whites from TH & DH Knipe, Ulverston.
An increased entry of store and weaner pigs saw a top price of £88 achieved for Pietrain x gilts from G Hargreaves, Lancaster who sold boars at £86.
Weaners sold to a top price of £40 from R Holland, Millom who sold others at £33. Today’s sale featured two sows each with a litter, which sold to a top price of £180.
The next sale of pigs is on Tuesday the 28th September and vendors are advised to pre enter pigs to assist with canvasing for buyers and organising the sale.
