J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, 19th October 2021

PRIME LAMBS

The weekly sale of prime lambs has a strong overall market average of 230p/kg. 45-50kg well finished lambs were in strongest demand and averaged 235p/kg. Handy weighted lambs were eagerly bid for, averaging 230p/kg.
Heavy weight lambs continue to be a strong trade at Junction 36, with a consignment from JR Corlett & Son, Cockermouth selling Texels to £154, £149 and £144. Other noted prices for heavy weight Texels were £149 from RM&D Dixon, Longslade, followed by £145 from JN&DJ Bowes, Crook. Heavy weight Suffolks peaked at £140 from TH Gibson & Son, Staveley. Other leading prices for heavy weight Suffolks was £135 from TA&J Dixon, Selside and £134 from JN&DJ Bowes. Plenty of pens of heavy weight lambs easily sold in the £120’s and more. Beltex x lambs topped at 263p/kg from F&CE Bentley & Son, Shap, with plenty of pens of better-bred lambs easily selling in excess 250p/kg mark. As to be expected for this time of the year, more hill bred lambs were on the market today, which saw Cheviot Mules peak at £110 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe, with Cheviots topping at £109 from AR&BJ Thompson, Selside. Mule lambs topped at £105 weighing 48kg from JE&D Hutchinson, Sedbergh. Plenty of pens of Mules lambs sold in excess of the £100 mark. More Horned lambs on the market today saw Rough Fells sell to £90 from VR Guy, Tebay, followed by others to £89 from D Moore, Stafford.

CAST SHEEP

The cast ewe numbers continue to keep coming forward, with an entry of 615 forward today, selling to a strong trade for the time of year. Today saw a lot of hill bred ewes and leaner types on the market.
A pure Texel ewe from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston led the way selling to £150, with this vendor also selling Suffolk x ewes to £134 and £122. Texel x ewes sold to £135 and £120 from JG&PH Thompson, Selside. Plenty of pens of Continental ewes sold between £100-£120. Big powerful Mule ewes topped at £114 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston, with other pens of strong Mule ewes often selling to the late nineties. Horned ewes peaked at £76 today for Rough Fells from RH Thexton, Sedbergh.
Cast rams were in strong demand today, with Texels peaking at £144 from H Berg, Crossthwaite and Rough Fells selling to £138 from VR Guy, Tebay.
