BREEDING SHEEP

The weekly sale of Sheep with Lambs at foot had an entry of 225 forward selling to plenty of demand once again. Ms A Burch, Lowgill took top spot selling Cheviot mule ewe with a pair of Valais Blacknose cross lambs at foot, one gimmer and one wether, selling for £300 for the family.
A Texel ewe with smart Texel twin lambs sold to £290 from GA Rawsthorne, Cartmel also selling a Texel shearling with twin lambs to £250. Sam Barlow of Crostons consignment sold to £285 for Continental ewes suckling twin lambs.
The on-going flock dispersal on behalf of P & SA Edmondson, Stainton peaked at £270 for continental ewes and twins with other outfits from the same home selling to £260 and £250 twice. Aged mule ewes with twin lambs from the same home sold to £235 and £232. Aged mule ewes and twins regularly selling in excess of £70 a life. Continental ewes with single lambs sold to £180 and £178 from P & SA Edmondson, Stainton.

SPRING LAMBS

There were more spring lambs on offer this week meeting plenty of demand. They sold to £141 for 45kg Continental lambs from FE & CM Robinson & Son, Crooklands with others from the same home selling to £139 or 323p/kg. Suffolk’s sold to £124 or 326p/kg from MJ Waller, Lupton.

PRIME HOGGS

This trade continues to go from strength to strength with a larger offering forward this week. A large number of the hoggs in the market today were horned and Herdwicks very well sold with all vendors well pleased with their trade and more are required. The market average was with an overall market average of 282p/kg with a SQQ of 287 and handy weights averaging over 290p/kg. Heavy Texel hoggs from RH Thexton, Sedbergh lead the way selling to £148, matched by the consignment from MW & MR Black, Staveley selling continentals hoggs to £148 and £146. Beltex hoggs from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside sold to £146 and £144 with other Beltex hoggs selling to £143 from PD & P Mason, Burton in Kendal. The consignment of heavy weight hoggs from W & J Livesey, Inskip sold to £145.50, £144.50, £141 and £140.50 with heavy weight Texel hoggs from EI, EA & TW Wilson, Grange over Sands selling to £142 and £140. Beltex hoggs this week topped at 378p/kg and 370p/kg from PD & P Mason, Burton in Kendal.
There were some great runs of well-fed upland hoggs forward, a credit to all our vendors meeting equally as strong demand. Heavy weight Masham hoggs sold to a top of £140.50 from W & J Livesey, Inskip. Cheviot hoggs weighing 45kg topped at £132 from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston. Mule hoggs sold to £129 from WI & AM Atkinson & son, Bleasdale with others to £128 from W & J Livesey, Inskip. Horned hoggs peaked at £127 for heavy Rough Fells from J Fryars, Kirkham with Scotch Blackface selling to 300p/kg or £123 and Swaledales also achieving 3123 from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston. Herdwick hoggs peaked at £117 from Kevin Wrathall, Broughton in Furness. Lightweight herdwick hoggs the trade of the day once again, selling 30kg Herdwick hoggs to £88 for a pen of thirty from SW & A Hoggarth, Broughton in Furness.

CAST SHEEP

There was an increased entry of cast sheep with 440 going through the ring today with trade improving week on week and all classes selling to a flying trade for the upcoming Festival.
Pure Texel ewes from R & E Ladds topped the trade at £172, closely followed by WT Whitaker & Son, also selling Texels to £169. Many pure bred Texel ewes were selling at £150 plus with Texels out of Mules selling at £125 – £130.
Pure Suffolk ewes from T & E Redmayne, Southwaite sold to £161 with others from the same home selling to £138. Caley & Mitchinson, Windermere sold Leicester ewes to £139. Mule ewes once again sold to a strong trade with many selling around the £110 – £115 mark and topping at £120 from TW Nelson & Son, Halfpenny with all Mules forward averaging £104. A run of Cheviot Mule ewes from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale sold to £138.
Hill ewes were a strong trade once again with Cheviots topping at £99 from JW & E Woof & Son, Firbank with others selling to £97 from Wannop Farms for a pen of 18 ewes. Swaledale ewes topped at £89 from D P Ainsworth, Woodplumpton with others selling to £82 from WI & AM Atkinson & son, Bleasdale. All Swaledale ewes forward averaged £65. Rough Fell ewes topped at £87 from RH Thexton, Murthwaite with Herdwicks peaking at £87 from Messrs Hodgson, Rydal.

CAST RAMS

Cast rams continue to be well sold at J36 with Charollais from LA & LM Lambert, Lupton selling to £188 with Leicesters selling to £162 from DJ & A Freeman, Troutbeck, with Swaledales to £88 from K Wrathall, Broughton in Furness.

More cast sheep of all types are needed for the next couple of weeks to fulfil buyers demands with the upcoming Festival.
