J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 In-Lamb Breeding Sheep and Store Hoggs, Thursday 11th March 2021

Breeding Sheep

North West Auctions held its March sale of in lamb breeding sheep, once again a strong demand and eagerly bid for despite the change to the wet weather. The consignment from IE & MA Taylor, Whinfell took top spot this week with a pen of 1 crop Texel X Ewes scanned twins and singles realising £175, closely followed by a pen 2/3 crop ewes also scanned twins and singles selling to £170, in lamb to Texel/Beltex Tups.

A bumper entry of Mule in lamb hoggs forward once again met plenty of demand at J36. The consignment from JJ Hope, Wigton was certainly worth the travel selling to £160 twice and £158 with the consignment of over 100 averaging £152. These scanned in lamb to the Texel tup due April carrying a mix of Twins and singles. The run of Mule in lamb hoggs from P Whitton & Son, Burneside peaked at £145.

There was just a handful of Swaledale in lamb ewes with the consignment from P Whitton & Son, Burneside sold broken mouthed Swaledale Ewes, in lamb to the Blue Faced Leicester Tup to £100.

Store Hoggs

The fortnightly sale of store hoggs were once again keenly bid for with the demand remaining very strong for the time of year and more desperately required as buyers went home short of numbers.

Taking the top spot today was a pen of Beltex x hoggs consigned by S F Herring, Millom realising £120 with Continental from the same home selling to £108. Strong Texel hoggs regularly selling in excess of the £110 mark peaking at £115 from J A Chapman, Kendal, £114 from P W Clarke, Crosthwaite, £114 C Jackson, Ingleton with others from this home to £110 twice. The consignment from CI Briggs, Ambleside sold to £111. Suffolk’s topped at £109 consigned by J W Robinson & Son, Farleton. Plenty of short keep continental and Suffolk lambs sold in excess of the £100 mark. Hill bred hoggs sold to a top of £99 for Mules from C Jackson, Ingleton with Cheviot hoggs selling to £94 from KA Purtill, Wigan. An impressive sale average of £92.84 was achieved.
