Prime Hoggs
The weeky sale of Prime Hoggs had a reduced entry of 730 forward selling to an overall market average of 241p/kg with an SQQ of 248p/kg, with the 35kg – 45kg bracket averaging 254p/kg.
Handy weighted Continental lambs were in most demand today with best quality butchers lambs regularly selling over the £3/kg mark. The consignment from Alistair and Bradley Thompson, Selside led the way selling to 346p/kg, 337p/kg, 325p/kg and 310p/kg, or £135, £127 and £125. This was followed by RH M & S Boyren, Colton selling to 316p/kg and the consignment from John Twigge, Lindale selling to 307p/kg and 305p/kg twice with John’s consignment peaking at £126.
Other noted prices for Beltex hoggs was £133 from N Cooper & Sons, Broughton in Furness, followed by Continentals from Scott Middleton, Dent and £127 from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale. Plenty of pens of heavy weight and good confirmation Continental hoggs selling in the region of £120 and above. Suffolks this week topped at £121 from J Read, Hutton Roof.
Upland hoggs saw Mashams selling to £113 twice from D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe and J E Read, Hutton Roof. Cheviot hoggs sold to £113 from EW & JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge who also sold Mules to £106. Mule hoggs peaked at £109.50 from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside.
Horned hoggs sold to £104 for 39kg Scotch Black Face from M & WS Barker, Halton.
Cast Sheep
A reduced entry of cast sheep forward with 250 going through the ring. All ewes selling to a similar trade as last few weeks. Texel ewes once again led the way selling to 138 from T Wilson, Selside with others to £136 from H Geldard, Foulshaw. Many pure bred Texel ewes selling £130 plus with the next level down selling between 105 and 110 All Texels forward averaged £106.
Suffolk ewes from W Garnett & Son, Ackenthwaite sold to £126 with all Suffolks averaging £107.
R Harker & Son, Grayrigg sold Leicester ewes to £121 with others from the same home sold to £110.
A bigger show of Mule ewes forward with heavy Mule ewes selling between £90 - £95 with a top of £97 from CM & CA Jackson, Lancaster with medium type Mule ewes carrying good flesh selling between £85 and £90. A run Lleyn ewes from JA & R Geldard, sold to £99 twice.
All hill ewes were keenly bid for with Rough Fells leading the way at £100 from S & W Dickinson, Tebay. Cheviot ewes sold to £98 from WR Clarke & Partners, Yealand with others to £96 from RH M & S Boyren, Colton. All Swaledales were keenly bid for topping at £75 twice from TW & C Shepherd, Underbarrow and MK Robinson, Staveley. Medium type Swale ewes selling between £60 and £65 with the lesser sorts selling in the mid forties. Scotch Black Faced ewes sold to £75 from J Woodburn & Partners and R Capstick & Son. More ewes could easily have been sold to vendors benefit with 10 buyers around the ring.
