STRONG TRADE FOR STORE CATTLE AT NWA J36
OTM/CAST COWS
The fortnightly sale of cull cows saw another fast and competitive trade with buyers ringside competing for all classes and types. Heavy well fleshed beef cows sold to 184p/kg for a Stabiliser from A Dixon & Son, Selside who sold others at 171.5p/kg. Other beef cows for further finishing sold to 144.5p/kg for British Blue x from MW & M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell with Limousin x and Aberdeen Angus x selling at 139.5p/kg from K Forrest, Westhoughton and TJ & K Beaty. Other beef cows generally 118p/kg – 130p/kg.
Dairy cows sold to 121.5p/kg from R & J Dodgson, Natland with others at 117.5p/kg from JR Robinson & Son, Nook. Top grossing cow today was a Stabiliser from A Dixon & Son achieving £1087 with others at £1075 and £1054.
Several OTM heifers were forward today selling to 149.5p/kg and £928 for Holstein Friesian from JR Robinson & Son, Nook.
STORE CATTLE
A competitive ringside of buyers ensured all store cattle sold to a strong trade. Limousin x steers from J & M Wilson, Selside sold to £1000 with others at £970 from GM Strong, Penrith. Blonde Aquataine steers from SJ &NS Wood, Windermere sold at £900. An entry of 8 and 9 month old Limousin x steers from B Heyes, Mossborough sold to £890 with others generally £750 - £850. Charolais x steers (8 month old) sold to £800 from K Armer, Bowston with Simmental x steers from PG & PD Airey, Cartmel (9 month old) selling to £890. Native bred steers sold to £930 for Luings from JE Hadwin, Mansergh who sold others at £890. Aberdeen Angus x steers sold to £920 from J & M Wilson, Selside with Hereford x steers from JE Wightman, Lupton selling at £860 and £850.
Heifers sold to a top price of £940 for a Limousin x from J & M Wilson, Selside who sold other 12 month old Limousin x heifers at £850. 10 month old Charolais x heifers from K Armer, Bowston sold to £800 with other Charolais x achieving £780 from I & AJ Armer, Bowston. 10 month old Simmental x heifers from PD & PG Airey, Cartmel sold to £770.
Native sired heifers saw Aberdeen Angus x sell to £820 from JE Wightman, Lupton and £800 from R Cowin & Sons, Mansergh. Hereford x heifers from GM Strong, Penrith sold at £750.

CALVES AND STIRKS
J36 sold another good entry of 95 calves and stirks.
The trade of strong calves remains extremely good with many buyers around the ring looking to purchase these types. Messrs Dennison, Ulverston topped the sale at £460 for a British Blue bull with other Blue bulls selling to £400 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick. MH & AR Robinson sold a run of Charolais bulls to a peak of £400. A smaller show of native bulls were forward were all keenly bid for. Aberdeen Angus topped at £320 from WR Clarke and Simmental bulls from RF & CE Hodgson topped at £350 with others from the same home selling to £340. The heifer trade was more selective with the best still selling to a strong trade. JR Handley sold heifers to £315 with other heifers to £315 from MH & AR Robinson.
A large number of young beef calves were in the market and as seen in many other local markets, met a slightly more selective trade, with Continental bulls selling to £250 and £280. Heifers were £250 - £260. Dairy bull calves sold to a fast trade at J36.
Weaned calves from Messrs Dennison sold to £300 and £265. On-milk black and whites sold to £105 from AK & BM Robinson & Son. Medium types sold between £55 - £75. All black and whites averaged to £108.
Stirks were keenly bid for again with all selling to a buoyant trade. Shuttleworth & Brown sold 5 month old Limousin bullocks to £690 with others to £600 at the same age. JM Simpson, Underbarrow sold Limousin bulls out of dairy cows to £580. More weanlings and stirks are needed to fulfil buyers orders.
