Prime Hoggs
Another scintillating trade was enjoyed at NWA J36 for prime hoggs. An impressive average was achieved of 257p/kg which is good considering the amount of hill bred hoggs in the mart today. SQQ was 265p/kg.
George Harryman, Hawkshead achieved a double wammy twice selling to £134, firstly with 52kg Beltex lambs purchased by Browns Quality Meats, Ulverston and secondly with 41kg Beltex lambs achieving the day’s top pence per kilo of 326p.
Closely behind was the consignment from Paul Rossall selling to £133 twice for Charollais and Texel hoggs. Next was J Twigge, Lindale selling to £132 and £129.50 for Texel hoggs. Suffolk hoggs sold to a top of £128.50 twice. Firstly from R & EA Gardner, Brigsteer and then John Ridding, Kendal. Many pens of hoggs easily sold in excess of the £120 mark today. Best confirmation hoggs often sold in excess of 300p/kg, with noted prices being 320p/kg from J Ridding, Kendal, 305p/kg from DC D & J Taylor, Skelsmergh, 305p/kg from PJ & H Onions, Arkholme with plenty others often selling around the 300p/kg mark.
Upland hoggs saw Mules sell to a top of £120 from R & EA Gardner, Brigsteer weighing 50kg with 48kg Mule hoggs to £116 from EW & JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge. Masham hoggs peaked at £117.50 from George Harryman. Cheviots hoggs peaked at £118, weighing 44kg from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston with other Cheviots selling to £117 from J Allonby & Son, Grayrigg.
Horned hoggs sold to a top of £108.50 for Scotch Black Face from Williamson Bros, Ulverston with Rough Fells selling to £108 from Amy Harrison, Kentmere, followed by White Faced Woodlands selling to £105 from PJ & H Onions, Arkholme.
Suffolks sold to £128.50, averaging £117.46 or 240p/kg
Mules sold to £120, averaging £102.55 or 250p/kg
Swaledales sold to £97.50, averaging £87.51 or 243p/kg
Rough Fell sold to £108, averaging £99.89 or 238p/kg
Charollais sold to £133, averaging £112.73 or 262p/kg
Cheviots sold to £118, averaging £105.45 or 262p/kg
Texels sold to £133, averaging £111.32 or 266p/kg
Beltex sold to £134, averaging £118.30 or 294p/kg
Cast Sheep
A bigger show of 560 cull ewes were forward today, with all selling to a sharper trade than previous weeks. Pure Texels peaked the trade at £125 from Anna Quilliam, Witherslack with Texels out of Mules from BJ & J Crowe, Witherslack selling to £128. The best Texel ewes were selling between £110 and £120.
There was a bigger show of Mules forward with the best selling over £100 with a top of £110 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton and others selling to £106 from DM & D Cook, Ulverston with all Mules forward averaging £88.
There was a bigger show of hill ewes forward for a long time with JS & S Atkinson, Scorton leading the way with Swaledale ewes at £87 with others at £81 from R Lawrence, Cartmel. All Swaledales forward averaged £64. George Harryman sold strong Herdwick ewes to £81 with Dalesbreds selling to £75 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton.
A bigger show of 45 cast rams were forward with all selling to full value. Topping the section was David Dixon, Grayrigg with a Beltex tup to £140 with Texels to £136 twice from IL Dixon, Carnforth and D Hodgson, Lancaster. Hill tups topped at £109 from Shuttleworth & Brown with Swaledale tups from the same home selling to £94.
