Prime Hoggs
The Prime Hogg trade still goes from strength to strength with an overall market average of 269p/kg and an SQQ of 274/kg with handy weighted hoggs averaging an impressive 282p/kg.
Top price this week was £152 for 50kg Beltex hoggs from PD & P Mason Burton in Kendal, closely followed by Beltex hoggs selling to £140 and £136 from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside. Heavy weight Suffolk hoggs sold to £137 from E Needham, Stainton.
Texel hoggs peaked at £136 from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston with other Texels to £133 from JE Nuttall, Old Hutton. In excess of a third of the pens of hoggs forward sold well over the £120 mark.
Beltex hoggs sold to a top of 320p/kg with good confirmation, handy weighted hoggs regularly selling in excess of 300p/kg mark.
Hill hoggs sold to a top of £124 for Cheviots from SH & LE Birkett, Nether Kellet followed by other Cheviots to £120 from SM Watson, Ulverston. Mule hoggs peaked at £126.50 followed by Mashams to £119 both from DE & J Waine, Longsleddale. Horned hoggs sold to a top of £117 for Rough Fells from A Harrison, Kentmere. Scotch Black Face topped at £115 from GE & A Jackson, Little Eccleston with Swaledales to the same from G J Ibbetson, Roeburndale West. Dalesbreds twice sold to £110 from WI & AM Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale and R Capstick & Son, Ingleton. Herdwicks also peaked at £110 from A Harrison, Kentmere.
New season lamb sold to £130 or 309p/kg from MJ Waller, Lupton with Suffolks.
Cast Sheep
A smaller show of 340 ewes were forward with all selling to a stronger trade on the week. Pure bred Texel ewes from PK & R Woof, Stainton sold to a top of £150 with other Texels selling to £137 from E Needham, Stainton who also had Suffolks selling at £135. Pure bred ewes were regularly selling in the £125 – £135 mark.
Mule ewes were definitely dearer on the week. Heavy Mules regularly selling at £90 - £98, topping at £106 from TM W & H Hodgson, Ulverston with others selling to £100 from RJ & OB Simpson, Longsleddale. Medium Mules sold around £80 – £85 with small Mules selling at £62 – £65. There was a strong trade for all Cheviot ewes selling to a top of £109 from MJ Waller, Lupton with others to £106 from J & T Hunter, Dent. Medium Cheviot ewes selling around £70 – £75 mark.
Horned ewes were the fastest trade seen for a long time at J36 with Rough Fells selling to £94 from TM Potter, Orton and Scotch Black Face to £89 from G & ID Postlethwaite, Howgill. Dalesbred ewes sold to £79 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton. The best Swaledale ewes sold at £60 plus, topping at £68 from J & T Hunter. Medium type Swaledales selling at £45 – £52. A run of Herdwick ewes from RH Redmayne & Son topped at £74 with all Herdwicks keenly bid for at J36.
There were 30 rams forward with all selling to another strong trade. Charollais topped at £146 from T Pye, Ulverston with Texels to £141 from TM W & H Hodgson with Beltex selling to £117 from T Kendal, Grayrigg.
J36 offers many buyers around the ring for all types of cast sheep on a weekly basis.
