New Record Set at NWA J36 Anniversary Sale
On Thursday 4 February North West Auctions held its Anniversary sale of store cattle which saw a high quality catalogued entry attract a large crowd of competitive buyers keen to secure stock from throughout the North West, Midlands, Wales and Scotland.
A new market record was set at the sale with a British Blue x heifer from J Parkinson, Poulton le Fylde, attracting a lot of pre-sale interest and selling for a final bid of £1550 from J Mellin, Long Preston. Well bred heifers were actively sought after by buyers looking for replacement breeding stock with a consignment of Parthenais x heifers from ME & CA Duerden, Dalton in Furness selling to £1310 and Limousin x to £1215 from P & SA Edmondson, Barrows Green. Charolais heifers sold to £1210 from MJ Waller, Lupton with other well grown heifers regularly selling at £1150 - £1200.
An entry of Sim-Luing heifers from Low Moor Howe Farm Ltd, Winster, saw specialist buyers in attendance, selling to a top price of £1410 with others at £1400 and £1320. Younger heifers sold to £1140 for Limousin x (14 months old) from J & JA Harper, Sedbergh with other Limousin x £1100 from D & A Nicholson, Ulverston.
Yearling heifers sold to £1020 for Limousin x from JG & PH Thompson, Selside, with British Blue x achieving £970 from JE Wightman, Lupton. A large entry of younger heifers (8 – 10 months old) sold to a top price of £830 for Charolais x from AW & AM Clarke, Windermere and JR Corlett & Son, Cockermouth.
Native sired heifers sold to £1050 for Beef Shorthorns from PJ & JB Wilson, Flookburgh, who sold others at £1040. South Devon heifers from AT Threlkeld Ltd, Satterthwaite sold to £1080 with younger Hereford x heifers selling to £840 from JE Wightman, Lupton and Aberdeen Angus selling at £810 from JR Robinson & Son, Nook.
Steers sold to a top price of £1460 for a Limousin x from MA & JA Winn, Burneside with N Cooper & Sons, Broughton in Furness achieving £1330 for a Limousin x. Charolais x steers from P & SA Edmondson, Barrows Green sold to £1285 with British Blue x from MA & JA Winn achieving £1230.
Yearling steers sold to £1150 for Parthenais x from ME & CA Duerdon with Charolais x from J Twigge, Lindale selling at £1130. 10 month old Blonde Aquataine steers from MJ Whitworth, Bolton le Sands sold at £1070 with Limousin x from RH & C Ayrton Ltd, Abbeystead selling to £1065. Younger steers sold to £1060 for Limousin x from GE & JA Hayhurst, Ellel with other Limousin x selling at £1050 from HR & KA Hodgson, Barbon. 8 month old Charolais x steers from TM & D Dobson, Crosthwaite sold to £965 with British Blue x selling to £940 from MW & M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell.
Native sired steers sold to £1165 for Aberdeen Angus x from J Twigge, Lindale with other Aberdeen Angus steers to £1130 from MJ Shepherd, Newbiggin. Hereford x steers sold to £1080 from M Bateman & Son, Sedbergh who sold Shorthorn x at £1040.
Beef Breeding Cattle
A small entry of beef breeding cattle saw £1500 achieved on two occasions for Limousin x heifers with Limousin x bull calves at foot from TL B & J Knowles.
Cull Cows & OTM Cattle
Cull cows sold to an overall market average of 126p/kg with over half the entry being parlour type dairy cows. Beef cows sold to a top price of 169.5p/kg for a British Blue x from N Cooper, Broughton in Furness with Limousin x selling to 167p/kg from N Chapelhow, Penrith. Other beef cows were generally 120p/kg – 130p/kg with buyers looking for cows suitable for further finishing.
Dairy cows sold to a top price of 129p/kg for heavy well fleshed Friesians from CM & CS Chapelhow, Penrith with Fleckvieh from R Cowin & Sons, Kirkby Lonsdale selling at 124p/kg and Dairy Shorthorns from Messrs Robinson, Old Hutton selling to 114.5p/kg. Top grossing cow was a Limousin x from N Chaplehow, Penrith totalling £1341. Several OTM heifers were forward selling to 164.5p/g for a Saler from SI Porter, Grange over Sands and British Blue x selling at £915 from A Winder & Son, Ravenstonedale. OTM dairy heifers sold to 111p/kg and £689 for Holstein Friesian from RG & J Clarke, Endmoor.
A single cull bull was forward from G & ID Postlethwaite, Howgill sold at 137.5p/kg or £1310.

Calves & Stirks
A bumper entry of calves at J36 today, with 102 forward selling to another fast trade with fresh buyers around the ring. British Blues led the way this morning with bulls selling to £430 twice from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth with 4 week old Blue calves from JR Robinson & Son, Nook selling to £375. All Blue calves forward averaged from £325.
A run of Limousin bull calves from GCL Stephenson , Kirkby Lonsdale sold to a fast trade with a top of £320 and others to £315 from the same home. Native bred bull calves were keenly bid for with Aberdeen Angus topping at £390 from JR Robinson & Son, Nook with others selling to £305 from WR Clarke & Partners, Yealand Redmayne.
A big show of heifer calves were forward with Limousins selling to £380 from J France, Preston, with British Blues selling to £370 from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. Younger Continental heifers were the trade of the day, regularly selling between £240 - £280, with many buyers leaving empty handed.
A small show of dairy bred bulls forward with all keenly bid for with Fleckviehs peaking at £300 from CM & CS Chapelhow, Penrith with others from the same home selling to £255. Friesians topped at £135 from RG & JA Clarke, Endmoor, with medium type black and white bulls selling to £65 – £80.
A good show of 60 stirks were forward with all vendors leaving pleased with their day’s trade. Aberdeen Angus steers sold to £690 (6 month old) from C Slater, Witherslack with British Blue steers at 4 months old selling to £610 from LM Braithwaite, Bentham. A big show of Friesian bullocks were forward with FP & G Slater, Witherslack selling bullocks to £400 and from the same home selling weaned black and whites to £320.
