PRIME LAMBS

J36’s weekly sale of prime lambs went ahead as normal with a busy ring of buyers in attendance, with 1168 lambs forward selling to an overall market average of 272p/kg. Beltex lambs led the way selling to £164 at 48kg and £161 at 47kg from PD&P Mason, Burton in Kendal, with this consignment peaking at 360p/kg. This was followed by other Beltex lambs selling to £150 or 358p/kg from Richard Batty, Heversham. Other Beltex lambs sold to 352p/kg or £144 weighing 41kg from JG&PH Thompson, Selside. J36 continues to have a strong name for heavy weight lambs, with 50kg Texels selling to £159 from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston with other Texels from the same home selling to £150 and £145. Additional leading heavy weight prices were £155 for 57kg Texels from Richards & Milburn, Kirkby in Furness and £154 from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston. Plenty more pens of heavy weight lambs regularly sold in the £140’s. Standard weighted Continental lambs between 45-48kg frequently sold in the late £120’s. Handy weighted Continental lambs regularly sold in the region of 280p/kg. Mule lambs peaked at £145 weighing 58kg from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston with other 60kg Mules also selling to £145 from R&EA Gardner, Brigsteer. Pens of 49kg Mules sold to £130 from EW&JR Parkinson, Clitheroe and F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston. Horned lambs sold to £120 for Rough Fells from TLB&J Knowles, Selside, with Scottish Black faced lambs to £118 from OR Hodgson, Old Hutton. Swaledale lambs peaked at £109.50 weighing 43kg’s from JS&S Atkinson, Scorton. Light weight lambs continue to be in big demand and eagerly bid for.

CAST SHEEP

An entry of over 500 cast sheep were forward today, which sold to another strong trade. Cast rams led the way with Texels selling to £166 from LE&A Ridding, Selside and Suffolk tups peaking at £138 from G Riley, Bolton le Sands. Bluefaced Leicester tups sold to £137 from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston and £136 from JF Cook, Grange Over Sands. Plenty more tups sold in the early £130’s. Horned tups sold to a top of £110 for Swaledales from JA Bennett, Longsleddale.
Continental ewes saw Texel x ewes peak at £144 from Richards & Milburn, Kirkby in Furness with Suffolk ewes selling to £142 from G Riley. Plenty of pens of big Continental ewes regularly sold around the £130 mark. Mule ewes peaked at £118 from A&B Fell, Millom, £116 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth with Masham ewes selling to £115 from JL Bird, Flookburgh. Plenty of pens of strong Mule ewes sold between £110 and £115. Horned ewes saw big Swaledales sell to £106 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Many pens of well meated horned ewes frequently sold in the £80’s. A selection of goats forward today sold to £89 from K Little & D McClure, Cartmel.
