J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, 21st December 2021

Prime Lambs
The final sale before Christmas saw a slightly smaller entry of 1132 selling to a mixed trade, handy weighted and light weight lambs were in the strongest demand, with well finished Continentals regularly selling around the 300p/kg mark. Heavy weight lambs were less money this week as many catering outlets report less orders due to the Covid pandemic. Leading the way was 50kg Texel lambs selling to £150 from Jack Turnball, Grange over Sands purchased by Plumgarths Farm Shop. The next call was £140 for Texel lambs also from Jack Turnball and purchased by Browns Quality Meats, Ulverston. Beltex lambs sold to a top of 350p/kg or £140 from PD&P Mason, Burton in Kendal. Other Beltex lambs sold to £135 from Jonathan and Josie Smith, Brookhouse.
Upland lambs saw Herdwick x lambs sell to £130 from TW&C Shepherd, Underbarrow, with Mule lambs peaking at £125 from John Twigge, Lindale. Plenty more pens of Mule lambs easily sold in the early £120’s. Horned lambs saw Rough Fells sell to £111 from MP&H York, Sedbergh.

Cast Sheep
Today saw another good entry of cull ewes with 540 forward, all types continuing to be another strong trade at Junction 36. Texel ewes once again led the way selling to a top of £187 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. The best Texels ewes regularly sold at the £170-£180 mark, with the next level down the £120 and £130 mark. Some good runs of Cheviot Mule ewes were forward, selling to a top of £128 from PK&R Woof, Stainton with others selling to £125 from TH&DM Cornthwaite & Son, Cartmel Fell. A big show of Mule ewes were forward with all averaging £95, a top price of £110 was achieved twice from T&CM Kelsall & Son, Chipping and Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. A wonderful run of Masham ewes from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor sold to a top of £117 for a pen of 20, with other Masham ewes selling to £116 from W&J Penny, Kirkby in Furness. There was more selection in the hill ewes but all types once again keenly bid for, Cheviots sold to £116 from JW&E Woof & Son, Firbank with a full pen of Swaledale ewes selling to £107 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. All Swaledales forward averaged £70. Dalesbred ewes sold to £103 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping.
A smaller entry of cast rams on the market today with all selling to their full value, Leisters sold to a top of £152 from RI Dixon, Low Newton and Rough Fells to £128 from A&M Skidmore, Tebay and Charollais achieving the same price from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor.
