CONTINENTAL AND SUFFOLK GIMMER LAMBS
J36 held its new sale of Continental gimmer lambs, which received an entry of 1000 lambs, selling to a trade as bright as the weather. I would like to thank our pre-sale judge Mr Robert Towers for his time and expertise, after much consideration he awarded the championship to RA Batty, Selside. This much-admired pen flew away to a scorching trade of £156, closely followed by another pen from the same good home selling to £150. Other smart Beltexs sold to £142 from JG & PH Thompson, Selside. A keen interest was seen for well grown Texel gimmers lambs, topping at £138 from WJ & LA Barker, Arkholme, followed by £134 from J Handley & Son, Chapel le Dale. Many Texel out of Mules were selling regularly well into the £120’s with a top of £124 twice from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale and A J Geary, Milton Keynes. A lovely Run of Suffolks from TA & JA Dixon, Selside which were awarded the 1st place rosette, sold to a top price of £124. All vendors left highly delighted with there days trading and the new sale was deemed a huge success. All gimmer lambs forward averaged £108.
STORE LAMBS
The fortnightly sale of store lambs saw an entry 3543 forward selling to an increased trade, with an overall market average of £78.84. A larger quantity of longer-term lambs forward with short keep lambs in strong demand and eagerly bid for. Texel lambs peaked at £120 from V&S Inman, Coniston followed by other strong Texels to £104 from JA Chapman, Kendal and £105.50 from Thomas Wilson, Selside. Beltex lambs peaked at £99 from JC&E Pedley & Sons, Sedbergh. Suffolk lambs peaked at £93 from R&D Kellet, Cockerham. Plenty of pens of well forward short keep lambs, regularly selling in the early nineties. A larger quantity of hill bred lambs forward today, saw Cheviot Mules to £89 from JA & SM Allen, Windermere with Continentals out of Cheviots peaking at £89 from NC & PE Buckley, Staveley. A larger entry of Mule lambs forward today sold to a top of £85.85 from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale with others to £85 from D&A Jackson, Kirkby Stephen. Numerous pens of strong Mule whether lambs regularly selling in the early eighties with Mules averaging £79.14.
