J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly sale of Spring Lambs and Cast Sheep, 17th August 2021

PRIME LAMBS


The weekly sale of prime lambs at North West Auction Junction 36 saw an increased entry of 1240 forward, selling to a strong market averaged of 234p/kg with all lambs forward still averaging in excess of £100 a head which is very good for the time of year and included many consignments of light lambs. As per usual heavy weight lambs were eagerly bid for at North West Auctions with 58kg Texels selling to £148 from J Handley & Son, Chapel-Le-Dale followed by 56kg lambs to £144 from E Dodgson, Kendal. Other noted prices for heavy weight Texel lambs were £141 and £135 from S Geldard, Ulverston. Suffolk lambs peaked at £130 from LA & M Lambert, Lupton. Beltex lambs in more demand today at Junction 36 and keenly bid for selling to a top of £129 from John Twigge, Lindale with the consignment of Beltex sold to 277p/kg and 275p/kg. This was matched by Beltex lambs to 277p.kg from JG & PH Thompson, Selside. Commercial lambs continued to be eagerly bid for with well finished 43-46kg lambs easily selling between £103 and £106. As expected at this time of year more hill lambs have been forward and saw Cheviots sell to £105 from J&M Wilson, Selside, Mule lambs from the same good home peaked at £99. A large number of light weights forward today saw the well finished once again eagerly bid for.

A lamb was kindly donated by the Ridding Family, Selside with the proceeds going to Royal Preston Critical Care in memory of the late John Wilson of Selside. Thank you goes to all the bidders and the purchaser Abdou Farag who purchased the lamb for £205.

CAST SHEEP


The weekly sale of 700 ewes sold to a full ring side of buyers who were all keen to purchase which meant trade would be stronger than seen in previous weeks. Texel ewes led the way selling to £135 from PD & PJ Mason, Burton in Kendal with others selling to £133 from RH M&S Boyren, Colton. Suffolk ewes sold to £122 from J Scott & Co, Clark-in-Cartmel. Many of the best continental ewes we regularly selling at the £120 mark with the next level down selling around the hundred-pound mark. A ring full of Lleyn ewes from J&R Geldard & Sons, Levens sold to £110. Heavy Mule ewes sold to the trade of the day topping at £121 from R Cowin & Sons, Mansergh with others selling to £119 from K Richards & Son, Howgill. Many Mule ewes regularly selling well over the hundred-pound mark, with medium types selling at the £70-75 mark. Hill ewes were a fast trade with Swaledales topping at £82 from R Lawrence, Grange over Sands with a full pen selling to £75 from RS & BA Harker, Homle. This week saw new buyers forward for all types of feeding ewes.
Cast rams keep adding up to nice prices, Charollais peaked the market at £146 from DR Harrison, Selside. Texel sold to a top of £136 from C R Howard, Ulverston and Suffolks sold to £109 from Pilling Hall.
