J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Spring Lambs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 10th August 2021

Prime Lambs
What a difference a week makes, with a big thank you going to those who remained loyal and brought their lambs this week and enjoyed a strong trade. There was an overall market average of 237p/kg with 45 – 50kg lambs averaging 240p/kg as well as handy weights achieving the same price.

There was a full ring of buyers in attendance today plus a new buyer at the ringside which saw the trade twice top at £127. This was firstly for 51kg Beltex lambs from JA & KJ Allen, Ings. Also achieving £127 were 51kg Texel lambs from N & SM Robinson, Low Gill. Other noted prices for heavyweight lambs were £123.50 from Bob Lawrence, Grange over Sands, and £123 from JE Nuttall, Old Hutton. A consignment of heavyweight lambs from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland saw Suffolks sell to £123 and Texels to £119.50. Many more pens of heavyweight lambs easily selling in the late hundreds and teens.

Best confirmation lambs today saw Beltex at 281p/kg from Abigail Winn, Burneside with other Beltex lambs to 270p/kg from Bargh Contractors, Heaton with Oxcliffe. Plenty more pens of well finished, better confirmation lambs readily selling around the 260p/kg mark.

More upland lambs are beginning to come onto the market with 47kg Rough Fell Mules selling to £110 from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale. 43kg Mules sold to £96 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton.

Lightweight lambs today that were well finished readily sold between 240p/kg and 250p/kg.

Cast Sheep
The weekly sale of cast sheep saw an entry of 704 forward selling to another strong trade, with buyers competing for all classes and types. Heavy, pure bred ewes sold to a top price of £142 for a Charollais from R J Stott, Stainton with Texels selling to £131 from R & E Ladds, Kendal with others generally £125 t0 £130. Heavy Mules sold to a top price of £130 from K E Richards & Son, Howgill and T E, J S & S A Carruthers, Underbarrow. With other pens regularly £110 to £125.

Hill bred ewes saw Cheviots sell to £116 from G, G U & D Swarbrick, Meathop, Swaledale to £97 from Calderside Farm, Garstang and Rough Fells also achieving £97 from E & K Bland, Gaisgill. Herdwicks sold to £83 D Thompson, Broughton In Furness.

A small entry of cull rams today saw Texels sell to £140 from W H & G Hodgson, Patton with other rams being predominantly hill bred and selling at £85 - £86 mark.
Vendors need to keep these numbers coming to satisfy buyers demands with interest in grazing type ewes increasing week on week.
