J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Fortnightly Sale of Calves, Stirks, Store and OTM Cattle - 5th August 2021

CALVES AND STIRKS


An entry of 85 calves forward with best quality showing a massive premium today at Junction 36. A wonderful run of British Blue bull calves from JW & ET Sharp, Lyth sold to a top of £500 with others from the same home selling twice to £480. All British Blue bull calves forward averaged an impressive £461. Native bred bull calves were keenly bid for with Herefords selling to £440 from Bambers Farm, Cockerham. Aberdeen Angus bulls to £425 from B Mallinson & Son, Levens, with others Angus bulls selling to £420 from J Scott, Cark in Cartmel. Continental bull calves were regularly selling well into the mid to late £300.
Limousin heifer calves sold to a top of £450 from CM&CS Chapplehow, Clifton. Finishing off another good day for JW&TW sharp in the calf ring, with their British Blue heifers selling to £400 and £390. Bambers Farms had a nice run of Charollais heifers selling to £310 twice. Native heifer calves were keenly bid for with strong Aberdeen Angus heifers selling to £330 from Bambers Farm and Herefords selling to £300 from JS & IM Wilson, Whitbeck. Dairy bred bull calves saw a flying trade from start to finish, with a run of Fleckviehs from JS&IM Wilson, Whitbeck peaking at £380 with others selling to £360. Black and Whites sold to £370 twice from Messrs Dennison, Scales and B&MJ Nelson & Son, Heversham, with good rearing calves selling well over the £100 mark.
Well grown stirks were keenly bid for and selling to a premium with smaller stirks harder to place today. A run of Limousin bullocks at 6 months old from B&JM Crown, Witherslack sold to £750, with British Blue heifers from the same home selling to £720. All Black and Whites were once again well sold, with PD&PJ Mason, Burton-in-Kendal selling his run to £560.

STORE CATTLE


A seasonal show of store cattle, the best quality cattle selling to another strong trade at Junction 36 with Charollais bullocks from S&M Cooper, Leece selling to £1290 with Limousin bullocks from the same home selling to £1240. Yearling bullocks were regularly selling either side of the £1000 mark with a top of £1090 for a Limousin steer from J Twigg, Lindal. A run of Galloway bullocks from JC&E Pedley, Sedbergh sold to £995. A strong run of Charolais heifers from RJ&R Holden, Millom sold to £1160. With a lovely run of yearling blonde heifers from MJ Whiteworth, Bolton-Le-Sands selling to £1140. Limousin yearling heifers selling to £1030 from J Twigge, Lindal. Good yearling grazing heifers were regularly selling between the £900-£950 mark.

BREEDING CATTLE


A smaller show of beef breeding cattle on offer today at Junction 36, with best quality selling to strong demand. R&RM Dent, Ravensdale sold a Limousin cows and calve to £2020 with others from the same home selling to £1620. Older splitting families sold to a respectable trade, selling between £1300-£1500.

OTM CATTLE


Cast cows peaked at 207.5p/kg for a shapley Limousin consigned by CM&CS Chapplehow, Cliffton Dykes, she also topped the price per head at £1477.40. A strong consignment of Stablisers from A Dixon & Son, Kendal topped at £1254.93 or 177.5p/kg. Leading the top price for Friesians was JM Barton & Son, Lupton realising £1258.46 or 159.5p/kg. Cast heifers sold to a top of £1190.63 or 187.5p/g consigned by J Twigg, Grange-over-sands. Cast bulls sold to £1301.25 or 187.5p/kg for a Native Galloway from B&D Willison & Son, Levens.
Cast cows trade remains buoyant with an overall sale average of 144.3p/kg.
