The weekly sale of Prime Lambs at J36 had an entry of 1652 forward. There was a solid trade throughout the sale with a very respectable overall Market average of 193p/kg and SQQ of 197. This week saw well meated Continental handy weighted lambs in most demand, with leaner types in that weight band slightly harder to sell. Heavyweight lambs this week, sold to a much improved sharper trade.
Leading the way this week at £116 was heavyweight Texel lambs from DH Ashworth, Holme, £112.50 DW Hodgson, Cartmel Fell, and at £112 was Texels from B Lee, Witherslack. Hampshire lambs sold to a £110 from GB Holt, Rossendale with Dorsets £109 from the same home. Suffolk lambs sold to a peak of £106 from JN & DJ Bowes, Crook. With 15% of the pens of lambs forward selling in excess of £100.
Better confirmation lambs sold to a top of £224p/kg from J & A Smales, Ingleton with other pens of lambs at 223p/kg from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside and J & R Waller, Killington. There were plenty of pens of nicely bred lambs selling to the 220p/kg mark.
Upland lambs saw Cheviots sell to a top of £106 for heavyweights from HR & KA Hodgson, Barbon. Masham lambs sold to a top of £92 from WI & AI Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with Mules peaking at £89.50 from JS & S Atkinson, Scorton with plenty of other pens of Mules lambs selling into the mid 80s.
Horned lambs today sold to a top of £81.50 for 42kg from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton.
Cast Sheep
An increased entry of 645 cast sheep in the Market today saw another solid trade at J36. Leading the way was a Zwartbles cast ram selling to a top of £144 from Ted Park, Lyth. Texel ewes sold to £100 from WI Barrow & Sons, Dunnerdale with others selling to £99 from PW & D Swindlehurst, Underbarrow. There were plenty of pens of Continental ewes easily selling into the 90s. Mule ewes sold to a top of £89 from A Clarke & Johnson, Windermere with others £83 from PW & D Swindlehurst, Underbarrow. With plenty of pens of Mule ewes in the 70s.
Horned sheep this week saw Swaledale cast tups sell to £80 from E & K Bland, Tebay who sold Rough Fell ewes to £76 with others from the same home selling to £66. Lonk ewes sold to £64 from GW Robinson & Son, Crooklands. Swaledale ewes sold to £58 from J & A Smales, Ingleton. Plenty of pens of horned selling into the mid 40s – early 50s.
