Pigs
The end of the month sale of pigs saw 78 forward in all classes. Prime gilts sold to £128 for Pietrain x from D Nicholson, Cockermouth who sold others at £108. £100 was achieved for Large White x Pietrain gilts from first time vendor E Schofield, Rotherham. Top p/kg being the Pietrain x from D Nicholson achieving 122p/kg with others 118p/kg from D Nicholson and E Schofield with heavies to 91p/kg from W Stamper, Chipping.
Prime boars sold to £100 from W Stamper, Chipping selling Large White x with DC Morley, Auchenblae selling Duroc x to £76. Top p/kg being 95p/kg from W Stamper. A single prime hog sold to £118 (112p/kg) for a Pietrain x Large White from D Nicholson, Cockermouth.
Several cull sows forwards selling to £88 from M Bennett, Penrith and 53p/kg from Cowran Estate, Ulverston. Store pigs sold to £40 for Duroc x from DC Morley, Auchenblae with Saddleback x £30 from Cowran Estate, Ulverston. Weaners sold to £34 for Saddleback x gilts from Cowran Estate, Ulverston who sold others at £29.
Spring Lambs
There was an entry of 894 spring lambs forward selling to a slightly easier trade as seen nationwide with more numbers coming forward. It was the consignment from DW Parsons, Ackenthwaite that topped the market selling to £116 or 282p/kg purchased by Plumgarths Farm Shop. They also purchased the next highest price selling to £115 for Charollais from RJ Stott, Stainton. This was closely followed by £114, twice for Beltex lambs from RW & S Nicholson, Lupton which was purchased by Brown’s Quality Meats, Ulverston. Others Texels from the consignment from DW Parsons sold to £113 and £112. Beltex lambs sold to £111 and £110 from RA Holmes, Inskip with Charollais from the same home selling to £109.50. Plenty of pens of well-finished better conformation lambs sold between £105 and £110. Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £107 from D Metcalfe, Dalton in Furness with other Suffolks selling to £106 from JN & DJ Bowes, Crook.
Prime Hoggs
There was still a good entry of 246 Prime Hoggs forward as the season now draws to close. The trade peaked at £120 from JG & PH Thompson, Selside this was followed by Texels selling to £101 from Miss I Ridding, Old Hutton. The consignment from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston saw Mules sell to £88 and Cheviots to £85.50.
Cast Ewes
There was a smaller entry of Cast Sheep this week following on from the festival over the weekend with ewes selling to a sharper trade than expected. The trade peaked at £118 and £112 for Texel ewes from Miss I Ridding, Old Hutton this was closely followed by £109 from P & H Clough, Ulverston. Suffolk ewes topped at £100 from D Metcalfe, Dalton in Furness. Mule ewes sold to a top of £78 from JAS Bradley, Heysham with best Mule ewes regularly selling in the early seventies. Horned ewes sold a top of £58 from NW & EM Mason & Son, Middleton in Lonsdale.
