Prime Pigs
It was business as usual today with 54 Prime Pigs selling to a competitive trade with buyers keen to secure stock to fulfil orders.
Prime gilts sold to £122 for superb Pietrain x Middle White gilts from D Baldwin, Satterthwaite with a run of well finished Large White x gilts from D & E Monk, Ormskirk selling at £110 and £102. Large White gilts from W Stamper, Chipping sold at £112. Duroc x gilts from DC Morley, Laurencekirk, sold at £100.
Prime boars sold to £124 for a Pietrain x from F Gibson, Kirkby Lonsdale with others £114 from D Baldwin, Satterthwaite. Lighter weight boars to £88 for Large White x from W Stamper, Chipping.
Prime hoggs sold to £95 for a Large White x.
The market topped at 136p/kg for Pietrain x gilts from D Baldwin, Satterthwaite with other well finished pigs 105p/kg – 130p/kg with leaner sorts 85p/kg – 95p/kg with gilts and hoggs selling at a premium.
A cull sow sold at £118 (67p/kg) from J & L Tyson, Carnforth.
Prime Hoggs
The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs, as seen nationwide due to the recent outbreak of Covid-19, saw a reduced entry and a reduced trade. There was an overall SQQ average of 186p/kg and an overall market average of 182p/kg for the small number of 432 hoggs forward.
Trade for hoggs topped at £98 for 49kg Texel hoggs from CR Alderson & Son, Kirkby Stephen, closely followed by £95 for Texel hoggs from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside with other consignments selling to £93.50 and £91 and plenty around the ninety-pound mark. Mule hoggs sold to £89 from AM & AW Clarke, Windermere and £87.50 from EW & JR Parkinson, Clitheroe. Cheviot hoggs from the same home sold to £85. Horned hoggs peaked at £78 twice from RJ & OB Simpson, Longsleddale and RH Thexton, Sedbergh.
Cast Sheep
There was a smaller entry of cast sheep forward selling to a reduced trade as seen throughout the country. The trade topped at £110 for Texel ewes from E Dodgson, Kendal with others from the same home selling to £90, twice. Other Texel ewes sold to £94 from E & J Postlethwaite, Old Hutton. Charollais ewes twice sold to £85 from J Stott, Crosscrake. Cheviot mule ewes sold to £78 from RW Nicholson, Lupton with Mule ewes topping at £67 from JA & J Harper, Killington and other Mule ewes in the early sixties. Horned ewes saw Swaledale cast ewes sell to £57 from Forest Hall Farm, Selside. Fit horned ewes sold around the fifty pound mark.
