Store Cattle

The weekly sale of Store Cattle had an entry in terms of quality forward. The trade peaked at £1240 three times this week firstly for a pen of 5 Angus bullocks from EW & CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine and again for Angus bullocks from J Hesketh, Hutton with the third time for British Blues from JT & GB Dobson, Grindleton. This was closely followed by Angus bullocks from BW & LM Kirkby, Wennington and British Blues to the same price from CF Hoggarth, Burneside. Plenty more bullocks sold around the twelve-hundred-pound mark. Heifer sold to a top of £1210 for Angus’ from J Hesketh with other Angus heifers selling to £1190 from CF & EE Holt, Chipping. Limousin heifers peaked at £1180 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton. Plenty of strong heifers sold in the eleven hundreds. Dairy bullocks saw Montbeliardes sell to £1140 from AG Stafford, Out Rawcliffe with Friesians to £1130 from J Oddie & Son, Blackburn. Norwegian Red Bullocks sold to £1110 from J & JM Walmsley, Pilling. Bulls this week peaked at £1070 from WR & CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh.

The opening sale of the ‘Inbetweeners’ store cattle, a special sale section for young beef and black and white stores, saw the trade peak at £850 for Limousin bullocks from Charlie Butler, Hambleton with Limousin heifers from the same home selling to £740. Yearling Angus heifers sold to £630 from PD Anderton, Scorton with yearling Hereford heifers to £620 from the same home.

The next sale of ‘Inbetweener’ cattle will be on Friday 10th April, entries for the catalogue close on Monday 6th April. Cast Cows

The weekly sale of Cast Cows had an entry of 81 forward selling to a sharper trade. There was an overall market average of 130p/kg. Leading the way in the OTM ring today was OTM Limousin steers from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse selling to 199.5p/kg or £1272 and 189.5p/kg or £1218. OTM Limousin heifers sold to a top of 191.5p/kg or £1244 for Limousins from EJ Burrow, Milnthorpe with others from the same home selling to 181p/kg. Dairy bullocks saw Fleckviehs sell to 179.5p/kg or £1166 from CG Birkett, Carnforth with others selling to 167.5p/kg or £1221. Black and white bullocks from J Prest & Son sold to a top of 159.5p/kg or £1075 and £1066. Young black and white cows sold to 151p/kg from GA & A Atkinson, Cantsfield with heifers to 149.5p/kg from Richmond Hall Farms, Cockerham. Montbeliarde cows sold to 149.5p/kg for £1136 from WR & CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh and 144.5p/kg or £1053 from JK & B Birkett & Son, Morecambe. Beef cows saw Welsh Blacks top at 144.5p/kg from T & S Blades, Arkholme with British Blues to the same price from A & CM Carter, Witherslack. Plenty of Beef cows selling around the 140p/kg mark.

Calves

There was a weekly entry of 93 calves and weanlings forward this week. Weaned Angus bull calves twice topped the market at £375 from G & ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel. The trade for British Blue bull calves twice peaked at £340 from J Hoggarth & Son, Slyne closely followed by £320 from Lawson Farm, Cockerham. Other British Blue bulls from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel. Angus bull calves sold to £305 from David and Eileen Wallbank, Over Wyresdale followed by £290 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. Limousin bull calves peaked at £295 from GCL Stephenson, Kirkby Lonsdale. Plenty of beef bull calves sold in the late two hundreds. Heifer calves peaked at £275 from T & CM Kelsall & Son who sold others to £265. Other British Blue calves sold to £270 from AW & AM Park & Sons with Charolais heifer calves topping at £270 from T & G Parkinson, Out Rawcliffe. Once again, plenty of beef heifer calves in the early two hundreds.

Weaned black and white calves sold to £160, £135 and £130 from G & ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel with rearing calves selling to £70 from TE & M Kidd, Ellel.
