Pigs

Prime Pigs sold to a top price of £108 for a Pietrain Pigs x Saddleback hog from BR Harrison, Staveley who sold others at £100. A heavy weight saddleback boar from W Stamper, Chipping achieved £102. Other heavyweights sold at £90. Medium weighted white pigs achieved £88 from D Lord, Preesall. Top p/kg was 110kg achieved by B Harrison, Staveley with others generally 90p/kg – 100 p/kg depending on weight and breed, buyers showing preference to gilts & hogs and caution towards boars.

Stores and weaners were heavily competed for with Gloucestershire Old Spots gilts selling to £60 from S Lawton, Silverdale with white weaner gilts selling to £44 from MB Fawcett, Carnforth.
The next sale of Pigs will be held on Tuesday 23rd June for all classes of pigs.

Spring Lambs

There was another rise in the number of lambs forward at J36 which saw 1162 forward selling to an overall market average of 230p/kg for lambs ranging from 33kg to 57kg. The sale peaked at £125.50 for Suffolk x lambs from T & H Drinkall, Calderside Farm closely followed by DW Hodgson, Cartmel Fell achieving £124 for Texels. The market topped at 268p/kg for a Texel lamb from NW & EM Mason & Son, Carnforth with other well-bred Continentals regularly selling in excess of 250p/kg. Beltex lambs sold to £104 and 266p/kg from R & E Ladds, Scalthwaiterigg with Charollais to £108 from J, BL & I Ellis, New Hutton and 259p/kg from JR & A Geldard & Sons, Levens. Light weight lambs sold to 247p/kg for Texels from RJ Lowery, Holker with others achieving 245p/kg and 237p/kg from C Bousfield & Son, Appleby.

Well-finished continue to sell to a premium with buyers showing caution towards under finished lambs that would benefit from some additional feed to allow maximum return to the vendor.

Prime Hoggs

Prime Hoggs sold to £94 for Suffolks from A Hodgson & Son, Ambleside with Cheviots achieving £92 from AG Butler, Hambleton and Mules to £87 from SH & M Batty & Son, Quernmore. Well-finished hoggs are still attracting keen interest from buyers with Cheviots selling to 227p/kg from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston who sold others at 215p/kg and 214p/kg.

All hoggs forward sold to an SQQ of 190p/kg was achieved for hoggs today.

Cast Ewes

A larger entry of cull sheep forward today sold to an improved trade with a top price of £120 achieved for a Texel x ewe from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg with others achieving £110 from E Dodgson, Kendal and WJ & L Barker, Arkholme. Other heavy Continental ewes regularly sold between £95 and £108. Mules sold to a top of £88 from JW & TE Sharp Ltd, Lyth with others also achieving £88 from S Blades, Arkholme. Hill ewes sold to £74 for a Rough Fell from CP Bateman, Docker with Swaledales to £60 from RI Dixon, Low Newton and Herdwicks sold to £57 from K Wrathall, Seathwaite.

Cull rams sold to £87 from Meadow House Holding, Underbarrow with horned rams to £45 for a Swaledale from K Wrathall.

Buyers are cautious of over fat ewes with ewes now best sold in the condition ‘fit not fat’.
