Prime Hoggs

The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs at J36 had a reduced entry of 699 forward. There was a mixed entry of hoggs forward with a large number of hill bred hoggs in the market which reflected in the market average of 228p/kg with 45-50kg hoggs averaging 234p/kg. Topping the market today was Texel hoggs selling to £139 from JB Airey, Kendal closely followed by £138 from J & C Airey, Ulverston with others Texels selling to £136 from Messrs Fell, Barrow-in-Furness, DR Harrison, Selside and Josh Capstick, Ingleton. Cheviots sold to £136 from S Crawford, Staveley with Dorsets to £135 from C Hutchings, Broughton in Furness with Suffolks peaking at £131.50 from A Barnes, Milnthorpe. There was a large number of hoggs selling in the one twenties today. Hoggs sold to a top of 272p/kg or £120 from JA Airey, closely followed by 268p/kg or £129 from J & C Airey. Plenty more better conformation hoggs selling in excess of 250p/kg. Mule hoggs peaked at £114.50 from WI & A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with others to £110 from the same home with EW & JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge also achieving £110. Plenty more pens of Mule hoggs sold between £100 and £108. Horned hoggs peaked at £108 for Dalesbreds from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton, with Swaledales peaking at £94 from NJ Strickland & Son, Whinfell and JS & S Atkinson, Scorton. Rough Fells peaked at £90 from W Moore, Staffordshire.

Cast Ewes

There was an increased entry and an increased trade at J36 with 444 forward in which more could have been sold and more are needed each week. A consignment of cracking Texel ewes from E Dodgson, Kendal sold to £155 and £149 this was closely followed by Beltex ewes to £143 from N Cooper & Sons, Torver. Other Texel ewes sold to £135 from JC Dunning, Orton, £143 from J & O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor with plenty more Texel ewes selling around the £130 mark. Leicester ewes sold to a top of £123 WI & A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. Mule ewes sold to a top of £116 from WR Clarke & Partners, Yealand Redmayne closely followed by £113 from JF & AW Sutton, Longsleddale with plenty more pens of strong Mule ewes easily selling in excess of the £100 mark. Horned ewes peaked at £104 for Rough Fells from G & ID Postlethwaite, Howgill with Dalesbreds selling to £95 from WI & A Atkinson & Son. Swaledale ewes peaked at £89 from JF & AW Sutton.

The was a large number of tups forward today that saw Hampshires peak at £135 from NJ Strickland & Son, Whinfell and Texels to £131 from S Butterfield, Ulverston with plenty of Continental and Suffolk rams selling around the £120 mark. Leicesters peaked at £112 from WI & A Atkinson & Son. Horned tups sold to a top of £96 for Swaledales from D & J & A Freeman, Troutbeck.
