Calves

There was a great selection of 80 calves forward at J36 with all selling to a buoyant trade.

Leading the way today was a British Blue bull from Jonathan Winn, Burneside selling to £480. Other British Blue bull calves from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth peaked at £465 with others from the same good home to £455. All British Blue bulls averaged £395. A run of Simmental bulls from NA Procter, Cartmel sold to £360. Native bred bulls peaked at £350 for an Aberdeen Angus from RG & JA Clarke, Endmoor. DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg with Stabiliser x bulls peaking at £325 with others to £320.

Heifer calves were again the trade of the day. British Blues topped this section at £410 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick. All British Blue heifers averaged £350. Limousin heifers peaked at £310 from WH Kitching & Sons, Hale. A run of weaned Montbeliarde calves from C Dent, Kirkby Thore, sold to a top of £365 with others to £330, with the whole run averaging £275.

Black and Whites sold to another strong trade with a top of £250 from CM & CS Chappelhow with others from the same home to £240. Medium type black and whites sold between £70 - £90 with smaller types £35 - £45.

A few stirks again this morning, saw a top of £680 from S Thompson, Flookburgh. 6-month-old British Blue bullocks from Messrs Young, Lindale sold to £600, with Montbeliardes to £500 from the same home.

Cast Cows

Another strong entry of cull cows for the second sale in August saw a top price of 159.5p/kg for a Limousin x from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale with a Charolais x from G, GU & D Swarbrick, Meathop selling at 154.5p/kg and 151.5p/kg for Limousin x from JW & E Woof, Sedbergh. Beef cows generally were 140p/kg – 152p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 139.5p/kg from RJ Lowery, Holker and JM Barton & Son, Lupton. Heavy meated dairy cows generally 130p/kg – 138p/kg with mediums 118p/kg – 128p/kg. Top grossing beef cow was £1135 for Aberdeen Angus x from G Cuthbertson with dairy cows topping at £1037 from JM Barton & Son, Lupton.

OTM heifers sold to 194.5p/kg for a Stabiliser x from A Dixon & Son, Selside with others at 179.5p/kg and dairy cows to 154.5p/kg for a black and white from CM & CS Chappelhow, Penrith. Top grossing heifer being a Stabiliser x from A Dixon & Son, Selside achieving £992.

OTM steers sold to 214.5p/kg for a Hereford x from JE Wightman, Lupton with British Blue x from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton selling to 189.5p/kg. Top grossing being another British Blue x from JW Robinson & Son totalling £1211.

Just one cull bull was forward today selling to 169.5p/kg and £1140 for a Charolais from JR Park, Rusland.

All culls today averaged 144.5p/kg. More can easily be sold and are needed to fulfil buyers demands.

Store Cattle

The fortnightly sale of store cattle at NWA J36 saw another strong trade for all classes and types of cattle with new buyers and sellers once again in attendance.

Steers sold to a top price of £1190 on several occasions for some well-bred Limousin x steers from AT Rogerson, Chipping and Charolais x steers from RJ & R Holden, Silecroft. The stronger end of the steers regularly selling at £1020 - £1150, with most being little over 15 months old. A super entry of 9 month old Blonde x steers from MJ Whitworth, Bolton le Sands sold to £1180 with others £1080, £1050. Other younger steers sold to £910 for Charolais x from R & BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness and £900 LA & M Lambert, Lupton. Native bred steers sold to £1170 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus x from Messrs Ellwood, Kirkby in Furness with others £1120 from G Cuthbertson, New Hutton and £1050, again from Messrs Ellwood. Yearling Hereford x steers from GM Redmayne, Ings sold to £840. Dairy bred steers sold to £920 for Holstein Friesians from S & M Cooper, Leece with others achieving £860, £850. All steers forward averaged £951.

Heifers sold to £1160 for Beef Shorthorn x from J Hayton & Sons, Barrow in Furness who sold others at £1120 and £1060 being achieved again for Shorthorn x heifers from W & J Whitaker, Carnforth. Other heifers nicely selling over £1000 to include Limousin x from A Winder & Son achieving £1030 and an 8 month old Blonde x from MJ Whitworth, Bolton le Sands at £1050 and others £1000.

Yearling heifers sold to £830 for Blonde x from SJ & M Richardson & Son, Carnforth and Limousin x to £820 from JR Corlett, Cockermouth and £780 from JT Procter, Mireside. All heifers forward averaged £815.

Breeding Bull

The additional beef breeding sale saw another strong trade for all classes and types with buyers in attendance from throughout the Northern counties keen to secure additional and replacement stock.

The sale peaked at £2280 for the final lot of the day from D Moorhouse, Natland selling a home bred Limousin x heifer with Limousin x bull calf at foot.

A feature of today’s sale was the first part dispersal of cows and calves from Mrs E Tuer, Windermere which sold to a top price of £2060 for a Simmental x cow with a Limousin x bull calf, with a British Blue x heifer with a Limousin bull calf achieving £1800. Aberdeen Angus x cows with Simmental x bull calves selling to £1750 with others £1500 - £1650. Cows with heifer calves sold to £1680 with others £1400 - £1500. A 3-year-old Simmental stock bull sold at £1280. Welsh Black cows with Charolais x calves from JR Park, Rusland sold to £1620 with others £1480.
