Calves
With the new rules firmly in place today, we saw a light showing of rearing calves. Trade was very respectable for well-bred and well-presented calves.
British Blue heifer calves were well received with Messrs HJ Robinson & Son, Elm Tree selling to £300, twice and £280. Messrs MH & AR Robinson, Holmescales sold similar to £290 twice and £280 with RJ & KR Wilkinson, High Foulshaw selling to £270.
Leading the Blue bulls was Messrs MH & AR Robinson, Holmescales selling to £270.
Mr J Graham, Wasdyke sold a Luing bull to £270. Angus bulls from DW Cottam, New Hutton sold to £170 and £160 and young Limousin heifer calves from MH & AR Robinson sold to £140.
A very small entry of stirks met a spirited trade. EE & RA Huddleston, Whitbarrow sold British Blue bulls to £470 and heifers to £400. Aberdeen Angus heifers from MG & WD Burton, Bowfield sold to £340.
Cast Cows
A competitive trade was seen in the cull cow ring with buyers competing for all classes and types with all forward averaging 115p/kg.
Beef cows sold to 134.5p/kg for a Limousin x from Messrs Hodgson, Windermere with others selling at 127.5p/kg for a Hereford x from R Gibson & Son, Kendal. Top-grossing beef cow was another Limousin x from Messrs Hodgson, Windermere selling for £941 with a Hereford from GM Redmayne, Ings achieving £901.
Dairy cows sold to 119.5p/kg from JW Hargreaves, Broughton in Furness with others achieving 117.5p/kg from RG & J Clark, Endmoor. Parlour type cows generally 102p/kg – 110p/kg with the leanest sorts at 75p/kg – 85p/kg. Top grossing dairy cow £896 from JW Hargreaves, Broughton in Furness with others £828 from RG & J Clarke, Endmoor.
Several OTM heifers forward sold to 184.5p/kg and £1045 for British blue x from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton with others achieving 174p/kg and £988. All OTM heifers averaged 150p/kg.
A single cull bull forward, being a Belted Galloway, achieved 97.5p/kg from K Milburn, Dent.

Store Cattle
The sale of store cattle at NWA J36, conducted under the new sale format due to the regulations for coronavirus control measures, saw all cattle sell to a competitive trade with prices achieved above vendors expectations as buyers were keen to secure replacement stock with several leaving unable to fill orders. Thank you to all vendors for your support of this sale, entrusting us to sell your stock on your behalf.
The sale today was topped by S & M Cooper, Leece selling a Charolais x steer at £1180 closely followed by a British Blue x steer from MJ Waller, Lupton achieving £1160 with others to £1110 from M Bateman & Son, Sedbergh and £1090 from TE & A Galbraith, Crooklands.
A nice entry of yearling suckler bred steers were forward selling to £910 for a Charolais x from S Procter, Selside with Limousin x £890 from WA Atkinson, Colton and £880 for a Blonde x from SJ & NS Wood, Windermere. Younger steers sold to £870 for Limousin x from J Kitching & Son, Cartmel Fell and Charolais x £840 from R & BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness. Others were generally £720 - £800.
Native bred steers sold to £1080 for Aberdeen Angus x from S & M Cooper, Leece, Hereford x to £1050 from MJ Waller, Lupton. A nice ringful of 10-month-old Luing steers from RM & PM Simpson, Troutbeck sold at £700 with young Herefords from G & ID Postlethwaite, Howgill selling to £640.
Heifers sold to £1170 for an Aberdeen Angus x from S & M Cooper, Leece with a run of Limousin x from S Forde Ltd, Clapham selling to £1160 with others at £1140 and £1100. Other strong heifers sold to £1100 for Limousin x and Aberdeen Angus x from P Whitton & Son, Burneside. Yearlings sold to £930 for Aberdeen Angus x from S Procter, Selside, who sold Charolais x at £820. Younger heifers sold to £810 for Charolais x from WA Atkinson, Colton with British Blues to £770 from G & ID Postlethwaite, Howgill. Simmentals sold to £710 from SW Atkinson & Son, Crook and Limousin x to £700 from J Alderson & Son, Howgill.
There were several dairy bred steers forward selling to £890 for Holstein Friesians from S & M Cooper, Leece and £830 for Fleckvieh from TE & A Galbraith, Crooklands.
Young bulls sold to £650 for Aberdeen Angus x from J Stott Jnr, Crosscrake.
