Store Cattle

The annual autumn sale of Store Cattle saw a strong catalogued entry forward attracting buyers from throughout the Northern Counties, Midlands and Scotland and all vendors must be complimented on the quality of cattle forward at today’s sale.

The pre-sale show saw over 30 cattle forward in six classes, which were kindly judged by Mr E Layton, Leominster. The Champion rosette was awarded to a superb British Blue x heifer from MA & JA Winn which later sold for the top price of the day of £1420, to the judge. The judge also purchased the Reserve Champion which was a British Blue x bullock, again, from MA & JA Winn sold at £1280 with both cattle destined for the Winter Primestock Show.

Plenty of well-summered cattle achieved a £1000 plus, which included Blonde bullocks at £1170 from TW & C Shepherd, Charolais bullocks at £1140 from TE & A Galbraith, Limousin bullocks at £1130 from A & P Hodgkinson, British Blue x bullocks at £1120 from P & SA Edmondson and a Limousin x £1100 TA Chapman & Son.

Heifers that weren’t put forward for the show sold to £1210 for a Charolais from TE & A Galbraith, £1070 for a British Blue x from DJ Clarke and £1030 for a Limousin x from MW & M Hodgson.

Younger Cattle experienced keen bidding selling to £1000 for 9-month-old Blonde bullocks from MJ Whitworth, Bolton-le-Sands. Native bred cattle sold to £1030 for Beef Shorthorn x bullocks from MW & PA Rollason, £940 for Herefords from MJ Waller, £1000 for Angus’ from I Dobson and Salers sold to £850 from TE & A Galbraith.

All classes of cattle sold to full value with buyer’s keen to attend the next sale Thursday 19th September so vendors are encouraged to enter cattle with confidence.

Calves

The fortnightly sale of calves and stirks had an entry of 99 forward. There was a very mixed show of calves forward this morning seeing a strong trade for all types. Best beef calves were keenly sought after and topped at £300 twice, firstly for a Limousin Heifer from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick and Angus bulls from TW & CA Long, Ulverston. Limousin bulls sold to £295 from Mr & Mrs Robinson, Old Hutton. Native bull calves were met by plenty of demand with a run from the Inman Family, Witherslack seeing young Angus bulls sell between £245 and £206. British Blue heifers were well bid for selling to a top of £270 twice, firstly from FB Dunning & Son, Orton and secondly from TW & CA Long, Ulverston.

Strong rearing dairy bred calves today sold to a competitive trade topping at £125 for a Fleckvieh from Messrs Sowerby, Drybeck with black and whites selling to £120 from Mr & Mrs Robinson, Old Hutton and TW & CA Long. Medium type black and whites sold between £70 to £90.

More calves are needed each fortnight to fulfil the strong buyer's demand.

Stirks this week sold to a slightly easier trade due to the current beef deadweight price, selling to £670 for a British Blue steer from P Wharton, Appleby. Other Blue bullocks sold to £410 from MH & AR Robinson, Old Hutton.

Please could vendors advise the office of stirk entries to assist when contacting buyers.
