Calves
A smaller show of calves due to many vendors getting their grass while the sun is shining. A quality run of beef bred calves from R Morris Eyton & son Whicham peaked the calf trade this morning with a real British Blue bull at £400, with other Blue bulls to £360 from HJ Robinson & Son Preston Patrick. All Blue bulls forward at today’s sale averaged £322. British Blue heifers for future breeding purposes were particularly well sought after, peaking at £310 for a month old calf from BJ & M Tomlinson, Salwick. TW Handley, Sedbergh topped the Limousin bull section at £335. Native bred calves again were well sought after at J36, with a young show forward. Augus bulls sold to £300 twice from BJ & M Tomlinson Salwick, with others to £295 from J A H Walton & Son Rookby.
A few Fleckvieh calves were forward this morning, topping at £160 for a 19 day old calf from RG & JA Clark, Endmoor. A young show of black and white calves sold between £60 - £65, with stronger sorts £110-£120.

A few stirks were forward today, with a very young show. 5 mouth old Augus bullocks from JD Hayhurst, Milnthorpe topped at £505 with Limousin bulls to £500 from MH & AR Robinson, Old Hutton, with Frisians from the same home to £280. A run of 2 month old black and white weaned calves from Messrs Dennison, Aldingham peaked at £205.
Stores
Store cattle achieved a top price of £1030 for an 18 month old Aberdeen Angus x steer from G Cuthbertson, New Hutton, with younger steers to £860 for British Blue x from BJ & M Tomlinson, Salwick. Beef Shorthorn steers sold to £785 for a 13 month old from AC & C Thexton. Heifers sold to £780 for Limousin x from G M Strong, Penrith and MW & M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell. Younger heifers generally £670 - £720.
There was plenty of interest in all classes and types of store cattle with buyers requesting more at the next sale on Thursday 11 July which will include the monthly sale of beef breeding cattle.
OTMs
A reduced number of cull cows were forward as is the case nationally, but still a ringside of competitive buyers. A plainer show of cows today selling to 114p/kg for Aberdeen Angus x from JD Hayhurst, British Blue x from B Mallinson & Sons and Holstein Friesians from JA & DE Batty & Son. Leaner diary cows were 95p/kg – 105p/kg with all forward averaging 104p/kg.
Top grossing was £907 from B Mallinson & Son. OTM heifers selling to 139p/kg and £828 for a Holstein Friesian from M & AR Robinson.
