Calves

There was an increased entry of 91 calves and stirks forward at J36 today.

Weanling British Blue bull calves sold to £370 from WH Kitching & Son, Milnthorpe. Younger beef calves saw British Blue bulls sell to £335 from DW Cottam, New Hutton, with others to £310 from W & S Airey, Whittington. Plenty of those best beef calves sold from £280 to £300+. Native bred calves were a little harder to place today, with Angus bulls selling to £295 from W & S Airey. Others from the same good home sold at £260. Heifers sold to £200 from R Cowin & Sons, Mansergh. A nice run of 4 week old Montbeliarde calves from Colby Farms topping at £170. A young show of Black and Whites were on offer this morning selling to £125 from RF & CE Hodgson, Pennington. Plenty of good rearing types selling in the region of £100. Strong Black and White stirks from Messrs Ellwood, Grizebeck sold to £420 with other big pens to £350 from the same home.

Cast Cows

Cull cows sold to 134.5p/kg for a Stabiliser x from A Dixon & Son with other beef cows generally 115–130p/kg depending on age and quality. Dairy cows sold to 117.5p/kg for Montbeliarde x from JJ & MA Park & Son with other meated cows 110p/kg – 115p/kg and leaner sorts 95–110p/kg and the very leanest less. Top grossing was a Stabiliser x achieving £1168 from A Dixon & Son.

A cull bull from RI Dixon sold at 117.5p/kg and £1139.

Store Cattle

There was a nice entry of store cattle were forward with most being younger dairy bred types. Top price was £910 for an Aberdeen Angus x steer from G Cuthbertson. Younger suckler bred steers to £810 from F & JM Mason, selling Limousin x. Steers in the 12-16 month age range achieved £750-£800 with 8 month old Aberdeen Angus x steers £630 from M Blease.

Heifers sold to £875 for British Blue x from J & J Postlethwaite with younger sorts £680 - £750. Native bred heifers sold to £715 for Aberdeen Angus x from G M Strong with others generally £520 - £600. Young bulls sold to £780 for Herefords from J E Sharp.
