Calves
There was a larger entry of calves on the market today but more are needed to fulfil the strong demand of our busy ring of buyers at J36. Numerous best beef calves sold in excess of the £400 mark with British Blue bull calves from FB Dunning & Son selling to £410 and CM & CS Chapplehow, Clifton selling Limousin bulls to the £400 mark. A run of beef bred calves from Lawkland Hall saw British Bull bulls to £370 at 6 weeks old. Plenty more good quality Continental beef bull calves sold in excess of £350. Continental heifer calves sold to a top of £395 for a wonderful Limousin heifer from CM & CS Chapplehow, Clifton with British Blue heifers from Lawkland Hall to £370. A young show of native bred calves passing through the ring saw Hereford bulls to £300 from Lawkland Hall with 3 week old Aberdeen Angus bulls to £280 from J Scott & Co, Cark in Cartmel. Black and White bull calves topped at £115 from RG & JA Clark, Endmoor, with medium types £70-£78. All Black and Whites forward average £69.
Cast Cows
A stronger entry of cull cows saw keen bidding from a full complement of buyers. Well-fleshed and heavy cows were easily sold. Limousin cows sold to 147.5p/kg from SW Atkinson & Son, Crook with others regularly 130p/kg – 145p/kg with medium feeding types 115p/kg – 125p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 114.5p/kg from C Preston, Millom with others 100p/kg – 110p/kg, leaner parlour cows 90p/kg – 98p/kg.
Top grossing cow was a Hereford x from J Bird, Flookburgh selling at £1055 who sold others at £1051. Dairy cows sold to £820 for a Holstein Friesian from C Preston, Millom.
Several OTM heifers were forward selling to 141p/kg or £1007 for Aberdeen Angus x from RJ & J Gardner, Kendal with dairies to 124p/kg or £707 for a Holstein Friesian from RG & J Clark, Endmoor.
A cull bull sold at 97p/kg or £935 for a Saler from Matson Farms Ltd, Windermere.
Store Cattle
Store Cattle continue to sell to a strong trade with plenty of farmers looking to take advantage of surplus grass. Steers sold to a top price of £955 for a 14-month-old Limousin x from F & JM Mason, Mansergh with an Aberdeen Angus x to £945 from G Cuthbertson, New Hutton. Yearling steers sold to £830 for a Limousin x from I & AJ Armer, Burneside with others generally £720 - £810. Yearling native bred steers sold to £675 for pure Red Polls from SEW Temple, Quernmore. Several black and whites were forward selling to £520 for 14-month-olds from C Slater, Witherslack.
There was only a handful of heifers forward, selling to £740 for an 11-month-old Limousin x from I & AJ Armer, Burneside with a yearling Aberdeen Angus x £640 from BJ & M Tomlinson, Preston. A consignment of Galloway heifers from A & L Birkett, Ambleside sold to £470.
There was plenty of interest in store cattle with vendors encouraged to enter stock for the next sale on Thursday 25 July.
Beef Breeding Cattle
The monthly catalogued sale of beef breeding cattle saw 44 forward and all sell to a competitive trade.
Top priced was a third calved British Blue cow with a Limousin bull calf from Forest Hall Farm, Selside, achieving £1600. An Aberdeen Angus x heifer with a heifer calf at foot from S Kellet & Sons, Pilling sold at £1240.
The sale included the first part herd reduction from T Sharp, Burneside which saw a top price of £1140 for Aberdeen Angus x cows with Simmental x calves with others regularly £1000 - £1100.
Several bulling heifers were forward selling to £1010 for a British Blue x and £900 Hereford x from J BL & I Ellis, New Hutton.
