J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: New Year Show & Sale of Store Cattle - Thursday 24th January

Store Cattle

The New Year Show and Sale of Store Cattle saw a catalogued entry of 370 which attracted buyers from throughout the Northern Counties with several new purchasers in attendance keen to secure replacement stock. Vendors must be complimented on the quality of the cattle presented at this sale; keep them coming as we have strong buyer interest for all types of cattle. The next sale is Thursday 7 February to include the Anniversary Prize Show for Store Cattle.
Today’s show was kindly judged by Miss Ellie Hargreaves, Preston who had an impressive entry of 21 show cattle put before her in the two show classes. The Championship rosette and winner of the Janet Gorst Perpetual Challenge Trophy was awarded to a 15 month old British Blue x Steer from MA & JA Winn, Burneside which later sold to the judge for £1300. The Reserve Champion was a 15 month old Limousin X Heifer, again, from MA & JA Winn which achieved £1200.

A large crowd of buyers saw 35 successful purchasers with many leaving empty handed or short of numbers. The sale topped at £1355 for a Limousin X steer from TA Chapman & Son, Helsington with other stronger, well-bred steers £1100 to £1250. A large entry of yearling steers sold to £1030 from M & D Hutton with others £880 to £1000.

Youngest suckler steers were £720 to £850. Heifers topped at £1200 for a Limousin X from MA & JA Winn with other nice pens of well grown heifers £980 to £1150. Yearling heifers sold to £920 for a Blonde X from MJ Whitworth, with others £780 to £880. Younger suckler heifers £580 to £680.

A large entry of native bred cattle saw Hereford X steers to £1120 from JE Wightman, Aberdeen Angus x steers sold to £1000 and 7 month old Beef Shorthorn steers £695. Heifers saw Aberdeen Angus sell to £895 and Herefords £865. Several dairy bred steers were forward selling to £775 for Montbeliardes and £745 for black and whites.

A small entry of feeding bulls sold to £765 for a 6 month old British Blue x from R I Dixon who sold others at £685.

Calves

The fortnightly sale of calves and stirks had another good entry of over 70 forward. Another younger show of calves forward again, but there was extra buyers present around the ringside, meaning trade was stronger on the previous weeks. The trade topped at £340, twice, firstly for 5 weeks old British Blue bull from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick and for strong Limousin bulls from RF & CE Hodgson, Pennington to the same price. Heifer calves saw a stronger trade today, with a Limousin topping at £290 from RF & CE Hodgson, with others to £280 for British Blues from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg.

A younger show of dairy bred bulls forward this morning topped at £150 for a Fleckveihs from Messrs Sowerby, Drybeck

It was nice to have a few stirks about this morning, selling to a good trade topping at £500 for a 4 mouth old Limousin Bull from PW Clarke, Crosthwaite

Cast Cows/OTM Cattle

The sale peaked at 147.5p/kg for a Limousin X from J Twigge, Grange over Sands with other heavy beef cows 115p/kg to 130p/kg, leaner feeding types were 90p/kg to 110p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 139.5p/kg from AE & M Hayhurst, Natland with an entry of predominantly parlour cows 80p/kg to 95p/kg.

Top grossing cow today was £933 from J Twigge. A cull bull from PW Clarke achieved 144.5p/kg or £1004.

All cows today averaged 102p/kg with half the entry being dairy cows.
