Prime Lambs

The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had an increased entry of 1500 selling to a far sharper trade with an SQQ average of 200p/kg. Best quality Beltex lambs regularly sold in excess of 220p/kg. Trade topped at 248p/kg for Beltex lambs from RJ Gunn, Milnthorpe and AR & BJ Thompson, Selside achieving the same price. Texel lambs sold to a top of £111.50 for lambs weighing 52kg from WL & F Richards, Kirkby in Furness. Beltex lambs sold to £107 with heavy weight Continentals selling to the same price from TE, JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow with Texels from TH & D Cornthwaite & Son, Cartmel Fell achieving the same price. Plenty of pens of Continental lambs easily sold around the £100 mark. Heavy weight Mule lambs sold to a top of £98 from M & YS Barker, Halton Park with Cheviot lambs topping at £95 from EW & JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge. Plenty of pens of well-finished Texel and Suffolk lambs were easily selling in excess of the 200p/kg mark. There was plenty of pens of Mule lambs selling in the mid-eighties and better. Horned lambs sold to a top of £77.50 for lambs weighing 42kg from AJ & CM Harrison, Kentmere.

Cast Ewes

Once again, cast ewes met plenty of demand with a larger entry forward in which more could’ve been sold to the advantage of the vendor. Charollais cast ewes sold to a top of £125 from the Isle of Man with Texel ewes selling to £121 from the same home. Texel tups sold to £117 from OR Hodgson, Old Hutton and £116 from WJ & L Barker, Arkholme. Suffolk tups sold to £111 from TH Gibson & Son, Staveley with Leicester tups achieving the same price from Fishwick Brothers, Longsleddale. Numerous pens of Continental ewes easily sold in the early hundreds. Masham ewes sold to £94 and £93 from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor with Mule ewes topping at £90 from S Kellet & Sons, Pilling. Plenty of pens of big strong Mules easily sold in the late eighties. Upland sheep saw Swaledale tups sell to £90 from JH Pedley, Barbon with Rough Fell tups to £86 from BJ Bainbridge, Shap. Cheviot ewes topped at £85 from J Perrem, Grasmere with Rough Fell ewes to £78 from BJ Bainbridge. Swaledale ewes sold to £68 from RF & CE Hodgson, Ulverston.
