Prime Lambs
NWA J36 saw an increased number of Prime lambs forward with 1417 being sold today, generating an overall market average of 172p/kg. The sale peaked at 214p/kg for Beltex x lambs from J & J Postlethwaite, Howgill, with other well-bred lambs generally 195 – 210p/kg. Heavyweight lambs sold to 180p/kg for Charollais x from JC Dunning, Orton. A larger number of hill bred lambs are forward each week, selling to 178p/kg for Mules from BD Gill, Ingleton. Lightweight lambs continue to sell well, selling to a top price of 182p/kg for Charollais x from HM Hodgson, New Hutton
Top grossing price today were Charollais x lambs from A Thompson, Carnforth, achieving £99. Plenty of heavyweight, well-finished lambs selling at £84 - £92. Mules sold to £78 from BD Gill, Ingleton with Mashams to £75.50 from the same home.
Well-finished lambs of all weight categories continue to attract the keenest interest from buyers with caution shown towards under finished lambs which would benefit from a final bit of finish.
Cast Sheep
There was a larger entry of cast ewes on the market selling to a similar trade on the week. Texel ewes sold to a top of £102 from LE & A Ridding, Steel Croft. Mules saw a sharper trade today peaking at £70 from R Saunders, Ulverston closely followed by £69 from TJ Beaty, Windermere. A bigger show of hill bred ewes forward saw strong Cheviot ewes from SP Pease, Kirkby Lonsdale topping at £74 with Dalesbred to £62 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton. Swaledale ewes peaked at £49 from CW Kipling, Penrith with others to £47 from Fishwick Bros.
