J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Thursday 8th August

Calves

There was an increased entry of 114 calves forward this week selling to a continued strong trade at J36. There was a busy ringside of buyers for all types of calves with all vendors leaving pleased with their trade. Topping the sale today was a wonderful British Blue Bull from Lawkland Hall Farm at £435. A consignment of beef bred calves from Andrew Long, Ulverston, saw Limousin Bulls sell to £400 and £370, with heifers to £385 from the same home. A run of 4 week old British Blue calves from David Barton, Lupton saw bulls to £350 with heifers at £325. A strong trade was seen for native bred calves seeing a top of £340 for an Aberdeen Angus bull from Andrew Long. Others sold to £310 from BJ & M Tomlinson, Preston. Other run of strong Montbeliarde calves from Colby Farms, Appleby peaked at £250. There was a young show of Black and Whites again at J36 this morning seeing rearing types sell between £60 and £70, topping at £100 from MA & S Johns Brough, with medium types £35 to £40.

Cast Cows

There was another strong entry of Cull Cows saw a top price of 127.5p/kg achieved for a Limousin x cow from J Twigge, Lindale with others to 124.5p/kg from JE Wightman and GH Jones. Medium beef cows were generally selling between 115p/kg and 125p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 114p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from RG & J Clark, Endmoor with other heavy sorts 110p/kg to 114p/kg, medium sorts 100p/kg to 110p/kg with parlour sorts 85p/kg to 95p/kg.

Top grossing cow was £903 for a Limousin x from J Twigge and £814 for a Holstein Friesian from RG & J Clark.

Several cull bulls forward sold to 134p/kg from AV Lord & Co, Ulverston and to £1175 from GH Jones, Sawrey.

Store Cattle

Store Catlte Sold to a top price of £980 for an Aberdeen Angus x Steer from G Cuthberston, New Hutton with other Aberdeen Angus x steers selling to £975 from S & M Cooper, Leece other steers (20m to 24m) selling between £900 and £950. Younger steers to £745 for an Aberdeen Angus x from GM Strong, Penrith and a 6-month-old British Blue x selling to £600 from MJ Whitworth, Bolton-le-Sands.

Heifers sold to £710 for an 8 month old Blonde from MJ Whitworth who sold others to £705. Native Bred heifers sold to £620 for a 12 month old from Hereford x from FP & G Slater, Witherslack with most heifers today aged between 8 and 14 months selling between £500 and £620.

Young bulls sold to £705 for a Limousin x from D Leighton, Kirkby-in-Furness.

Beef Breeding

The Cows and calves on offer were all strongly bid for with more needed to meet the buyers demand. The sale topped at £1300 for a young British Blue x cow with a month old Limousin x bull calf at foot from E Rossall, Preesall.
A run of Aberdeen Angus x cows with Simmental calves at foot from T Sharp, Burneside sold to £1210 with others to £1050 and £1180.

Hereford bulls sold to £1040 for a 19 month old pure bred from N & L Cummings, Holmrook.
