J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Thursday 18th April

Calves

There was another good day in the calf ring today at J36 with all vendors leaving happy. Trade topped at £405 for a Limousin bull calf from CM & CS Chapplehow, Clifton Dykes with others from the same good home to £400. British Blue bulls met another strong trade with a peak of £380 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick. A mixed show of native bred bull calves in this morning topped at £300 for an Aberdeen Angus from R Morris Eyton & Son, Millom. A young show of Limousin bull calves forward today peaked at £275 from B & MJ Nelson & Son, Heversham. A smart run of Limousin heifers from CM & CS Chappelhow, Clifton Dykes peaked at £390 with others at £360. A mixed young show of British Blue heifers forward today topped at £290. Plenty of beef calves sold in the mid two hundreds. A very mixed show of Black and White bull claves sold to full value, topping at £50 from R Morris Eyton & Son with others at £42.

OTM Cattle

Cull cows were a sharper trade for all types with more needed to meet buyer’s demands. All forward sold to an average 119p/kg with a large number of dairy cows forward.

The top price of 149p/kg was achieved for a young Holstein Friesian cow from JM Barton & Son with beef cows to 139p/kg for a pure Hereford from GM Redmayne. Meated beef cows were generally 120-135p/kg and dairy cows 110p/kg – 125p/kg depending on weight and finish. Top grossing cow was a South Devon bull at £1104 from GD Tyson.

The next sale for all classes of cattle is Thursday 2nd May to include the Annual Grass Day Prize Show of store cattle.

Vendors are strongly encouraged to enter cattle for this sale.

Store Cattle

The fortnightly sale of store cattle saw an active ringside of buyers keen to secure all classes and types of cattle ahead of turn out.

Steers sold to £810 for Simmental x steers from SW Atkinson & Son and Limousin x from DJ Clarke. Other suckler bred steers were £750 - £800 depending on size and quality. The annual draft of British Friesian steers from R & A Galbraith, sold in outlying condition, topped at £770 with others £760, all 35 averaged £725. Younger steers were £620 -- £700.

Heifers sold to £810 for Limousin x from R & A Galbraith with younger suckler bred heifers generally £700 - £800 peaking at £810 for Limousin x from J & J Postlethwaite. Young bulls sold to £770 for Limousin x from SW Atkinson and Holstein Friesians £480 from JH Barker & Son.
