Prime Hoggs
There was a similar number of prime hoggs in the market today selling to a sharper trade than the previous week with an average of 214p/kg achieved, which included many consignments of horned and hill hoggs. Mid-range weight hoggs sold to a market average in excess of 220p/kg. A shortage of Continental hoggs in the market in which more easily could have been sold saw Texels sell to 266p/kg or £117 from A and L Huddleton of Wray. Charollais hoggs sold to 261p/kg or £115 from WT & EM Townley and Son of Higher Westhouse. The trade topped at £120 for heavy weight Suffolks from Benson Farms of Claughton on Brock, closely followed by J Bargh and Son of Heaton with Oxcliffe selling Suffolks to £116. Plenty of pens of well-finished Continental and Suffolk hoggs sold in excess of the £100. Mule hoggs sold to a top of £103 from FK & F Woodhouse of Scorton with Mashams to £98 from Cardwell Farms of Stalmine.
Cast Sheep
This week saw another good entry of just short of fifty cast ewes in the market today selling to another good trade. The trade topped at £96 for a Texel ewe from RD Lambert of Out Rawcliffe with Beltex ewes to £75 from J Smith of Daisy Bank. Mule ewes sold to a top of £71 from J Burr of Quernmore. Horned ewes sold to £56 for Jacobs from P Greenhalgh of Cockerham, with Scotch Black Faces selling to £50 from WM Pye of Ashton with Stodday.
