Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle Friday 15th June

Store Cattle

It was great to have back over 300 store cattle entered at Lancaster this week. There was a strong trade for all ages and sizes of cattle. Topping the trade today was Barlow Bros of Croston selling Angus steers to £1590 and £1500. This was closely followed by British Blues to £1460 from JA & LR Wilson of Millom. Plenty of big well-fleshed steers sold in excess of £1,300. All steers forward averaged £1002. Heifers sold to a top of £1,310 for Angus’ from R Collinge and Son of Kirkham with all heifers forward averaging £1,033. Black and white bullocks sold to a top of £1050 from R Townsend of Freckleton with big black and white steers selling over £1000.

OTM Cattle

A few more cast cows and OTM cattle on offer this week saw 73 sell to an overall market average of 132p/kg, with a plainer leaner entry of cows forward. OTM steers sold to a top of 184.5p/kg from EE Thornton and Sons of Heaton with OTM Black and white heifers to 174.5p/kg from WN & D Smith of Cockerham. Beef cows sold to a top of 169.5p/kg twice from AG Riley of Bolton Le Sands and RHM & S Boyren of Ulverston. Black and white cows sold to 157.5p/kg from P & CM Stable of Little Urswick, with plenty selling in the mid 140s. Cast Charolais bulls sold to a top of £1,639 from JE & AC Clarke and Son of Melling. Black and white cows topped at £1163 from ME & J Swarbrick of Stalmine with Limousin cows to £1122 from RHM & S Boyren of Ulverston.

Calves and Stirks

There was, once again, a larger entry of calves forward with 6 pens in this week, seeing calves sell to a busy ringside of buyers with many fresh faces ringside ensuring calves were well bid for. British blue bull calves topped the trade selling to £390 from AW & AM Park and Sons of Ellel with others to £370 from T & CM Kelsall and Sons of Brown Brook. British Blue heifers peaked at £370 from AW & AM Park and Sons of Ellel. Angus calves are always in strong demand at Lancaster topping at £355 from David and Eileen Wallbank of Over Wyresdale. Other Angus bull calves sold in excess of £300. Dairy bull calves saw Montbeliarde bull calves sell to £210 twice from JR Newsham and Son of Conder Green and Black and Whites to £115 from AG Riley of Bolton Le Sands with plenty of others selling around the £100 mark.
There was a similar entry of striks this week which saw Angus heifers sell to £440.
