Spring Lambs

A larger entry of prime lambs on offer today sold to a trade in line with national averages, with the sale finishing up at 195p/kg. Once again, well-fleshed and good conformation lambs sold in excess of the 200p/kg easily. The trade topped at £113 or 251p/kg for 45kg Beltex lambs from TL & S Cross of Westhouse. Texel lambs sold to a top of £105.50 for heavyweights from DM & D Cook of Ulverston with Suffolks from the same home selling to the same price. Heavy weight lambs often sold 200p/kg or in excess of the £100 mark. The first offering of Mule lambs on the market sold to a top of £96.50 from WJ & L Barker of Arkholme with 34kg Mules selling to £62.

Prime Hoggs

The smallest offering of hoggs yet, with the trade less as lambs become cheaper and less demand now for hoggs as well. They sold to a top of £86 for Charollais hoggs from MW & PA Rollason of Meathop.

Cast Sheep

The cast ewe trade was easier this week, as seen nationally, with many saying demand is less due to the hot weather. Larger Continental and Suffolk ewes sold around the ninety-pound mark. Topping the day’s trade was Suffolk ewes from DM & D Cook of Ulverston selling to £91 with Texel ewes from J Woodburn and Partners of Ulverston to £90. Mule ewes twice topped at £84 from DM & D Cook and W Garnett and Son of Milnthorpe, with big Mule ewes selling in the early eighties. Swaledale ewes sold to a top of £63 from the Inman Family of Witherslack.
