Pigs
The Christmas Show for Prime Pigs saw 8 pairs forward for judging which was undertaken by Mr D Morland, Tebay. The first prize rosette was awarded to a pair of Pietrain x Saddleback gilts from J Stott, Stainton which later sold for a final bid of £140 to Browns Quality Meats, Ulverston. The 2nd prize pair of gilts were presented by P Crayston, Ulverston with the 3rd prize pair from N J Wilkinson, Barrow in Furness.
The top price of 165p/kg was achieved for the first prize winners with other well-finished pigs 95p/kg to125p/kg, lighter weight prime pigs were 80p/kg to 90p/kg. Buyers were keenest for gilts and hogs with boars a more selective trade.
Sows sold to £90 from D Baldwin, others £40 to £60.
Store pigs sold to £50 for Pietrain x gilts from AJ & EJ Platt with weaners to £34 for Pietrain x from S Pheonix, Preston. Other younger stores were £20 to £35.

Prime Lambs
There was a larger entry of 1300 Prime Lambs forward today which sold to a continued strong trade. There was an overall market average of 178p/kg with an SQQ of 184p/kg. Plenty of good quality conformation lambs sold in excess of 200p/kg. These twice topped at 228p/kg from SP Pease, Underley coming to £103 a head. This was closely followed by 227p/kg for Beltex from JG Harryman, Hawkshead who’s consignment topped at £95.50. Top price per head was £110.50 from SP Pease for a Beltex. Charollais lambs sold to a top of £88.50 from Ms Fell, Barrow-in-Furness. It was great to have plenty of lambs selling in the eighties. Suffolk lambs twice topped at £84 from JA & LR Wilson, Millom. Hill bred lambs saw Cheviots sell to a top of £79 from W, L & F Richards, Kirkby-in-Furness. Mules sold to a top of £76.50 from JS & S Atkinson, Scorton. Horned lambs today saw 39kg Dalesbreds from BD Gill, Ingleton sell to £70 with 36kg Dalesbreds selling to £68.50 with 36kg Swaledale lambs selling to £61.50 from JA Bennet, Long Sleddale.

Cast Sheep
There was a slightly smaller entry of 547 cast ewes forward this week selling to a very similar trade. The trade was topped today at £112 for Texel cast rams. Texel ewes sold to a top of £98 from R & E Ladds, Scalthwaiterigg. Suffolk ewes twice sold to £98 from Mrs EE Barton, Pennington and Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with Leicester tups topping at £97 from D & J & A Freeman, Troutbeck. There was plenty of heavy weight sheep selling in the mid-eighties to early nineties. Mule ewes sold to a top of £75 from Drinkall Bros with others selling to £73 from E & A Thompson, New Hutton with more pens of Mule ewes selling into the sixties this week. Hill bred ewes saw Cheviot ewes sell to a top of £56 from SP Pease, Underley. Swaledale ewes topped at £54 from DJ Clarke, Underbarrow with plenty of pens of big, fit, well-fleshed horned ewes selling in to the forties.
