Prime Lambs

What a difference a week makes, 900 lambs forward in the market achieving an overall average price of 180p/kg for all lambs sold, with buyers eager to purchase. Top price of the day being achieved by WS Burrow & Son of Silverdale for a pen of 47kg Texel lambs selling for 201.1p/kg, with top price per head also being achieved for heavy Texel lambs from J Kitching & Son of Cartmel Fell at £95.50. Well fleshed lambs within the weight band of 40-47kgs achieving the premium prices, with both medium and heavy lambs seeing an improvement of 12-13p/kg on the week. Buyers are still seeking lambs which are well fleshed and are wary of under finished lots.

Cast Sheep

An entry of just over 500 Cast Sheep and Rams in the market today, which saw string fit ewes meet strong demand. Top prices being achieved for well fleshed Continental sheep, with the sale being topped by Charollais ewes forward from G Sagar & Son of Caton selling to £102 per head, closely followed by Texel ewes from DC, D&JD Taylor of Skelsmergh at £101 per head. Fit Mule ewes selling well, topping at £92 from DM&D Cook of Arrad Foot, with plenty of others achieving over the £78 mark. Well fleshed horned ewes also selling well, top price achieving by Rough Fells selling to £77 from J Dixon of Flookburgh and Swales to £66 from RS&BA Harker of Holme. More interest in leaner types this week, as feeding men start to purchase.
