J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Store Cattle Thursday 19th April

Store Cattle

There was a small entry of Store Cattle forward, ahead of the Annual Grass Day Sale, which saw a flying trade for all classes of cattle entered. The day’s trade was topped at £1080 for a Limousin Steer from R&S Galbraith of Crooklands, which also saw others to £990 and £980. Heifers also from Messrs Galbraith sold to a top of £850 for Limousins, followed by DJ&EA Park of Crook selling 12-13mo heifers to £840 and twice to £820.

Calves

Less calves on offer this fortnight with 61 forward selling to another pleasing trade, beef calves were in short supply and more are required each week. Topping the trade was a British Blue bull from DW Cottam of New Hutton selling to £355, closely followed by a Charolais bull at £350 from JK & A Bowness & Son of Milnthorpe, with plenty of Continental beef bull calves easily £300 plus. Heifers sold to a top of £285 three times for British Blues from ME Wannop & Son of Morecambe and B Mallinson & Son of Levens. Charolais’ also selling to £285 from JK & A Bowness & Son and Limousin heifer calves to the same price from TH Gibson & Son of Kendal. Plenty of trade for Native calves with Angus heifers selling to £270 from B Mallinson & Son of Levens and Hereford bulls to £265 from ME Wannop & Son of Morecambe. Dairy bulls saw Flekviehs to £130 from J Scott & Co of Cark in Cartmel and Friesians to £95 DR & C Galbraith of Grayrigg.

Cast Cows and OTM Cattle

A smaller entry of Cast Cows forward in the market today, due to the fantastic weather conditions with many customers catching up with land-based jobs. The sale was topped at 199.5p/kg for a British Blue Cow forward from JW Robinson & Son of Farleton. Black & White cows topped at 139.5p/kg for pure bred Friesians forward from JW Hargreaves of Woodland, following at 134.5p/kg twice from the same home. A fantastic trade reflected by an overall average of 125.12p/kg for all classes forward.
