Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster's Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs, Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Monday 26th May 2025

SPRING LAMBS
With buyers galore all lambs were well bid for and many more could have been sold on the day. 116 forward topping at £166 for a Texel from H Birkett & Son, Heaton. Just behind that was another Texel from KA Purtill, Wigan totalling at £165. Around the early 40kgs in terms of weight was once again the most sought-after article. KA Purtill, Wigan hit 360p/kg for a single 43kg Continental lamb. A pen of eleven 39kg Texels sold to 359p/kg from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth. An SQQ average of 340p/kg was achieved. PRIME HOGGS
Prime hoggs ever so sharper on the week with yet again handy weight sheep most in demand. Top price was £160, and this was met multiple times, firstly by a 50kg Beltex from Maisie Beresford, Broughton in Furness, then a pen of three heavy Suffolks from Messrs Clarke, Preston. A nice run of hoggs from RJ Byron, Woodplumpton were upto 332p/kg for 44kgs, 331p/kg for a pair of Beltex at 42kgs and 330p/kg for Continentals at 42kgs. Heavier Charollais sheep sold to 328p/kg for 47kg hoggs from KA Purtill, Wigan. The heavy heavy end once again pulling the average back for the hoggs. The SQQ average ended up just shy of the £3 mark, with a few less numbers kicking about today.

CAST SHEEP
Cast ewes a very similar trade on the week with absolutely load of demand! A Charollais from KA Purtill, Wigan topped the section at £212. A pen of three Suffolks hit £192 and Texels topped at £190. Mules were also very much wanted, with a pen of four from D&E Whitaker, Quernmore selling to £172. Cheviot ewes topped at £170 from AJ Lyons, Wigan. More numbers required to meet ever increasing demand.

BREEDING SHEEP
Breeding sheep witnessed a very strong trade for the small show forward this morning. A two crop Mule ewe with a single Continental lamb at foot topped at £235, this was from E&J Redmayne, Winmarleigh. The same home then had two more with singles at £230 and then the same again at £220. Three Mules with twins also two crops hit £305 per family.
