Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep, Monday 10th February 2025.

Monday morning market once again sees sheep pens full and buyers keen to fulfil orders.

PRIME HOGGS

The popular prompt Monday morning sale once again saw a weekly increase in number forward and prices achieved, with today’s sale averaging 348p/kg. The sale topped at £210 on several occasions for Beltex cross hoggs from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby. Endless pens were £170 to £180 from J Twigge, Lindale, KA Purtill, Wigan, JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore and AG Butler, Hambleton. Well finished first cross hoggs were keenly competed for, selling to £168 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre and J Bargh & Son, Morecambe with others regularly £152 to £164. Pure hill bred hoggs sold to £168 for Cheviots from P Prickett, Hutton Roof who sold others at £158. Mashams sold to £151 from T&D Wright, Wray, Herdwick £148 from P Prickett, Hutton Roof and Mules £146 from M J R Standen, Lancaster. Lighter weight hoggs were once again keenly sort after, with continentals regularly £125 to £130, first cross £100 to £115 and hill bred £80 to £95.
The 400p/kg barrier was broken on several occasions from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore who sold Beltex to 402p/kg. Other well bred and well finished hoggs were 375p/kg to 395p/kg, first cross 348p/kg to 360p/kg, with standard weights in the keenest demand. Heavy weights sold to 362p/kg, with others generally 325p/kg to 340p/kg. Light weight hoggs sold to 345p/kg, with others generally 315p/kg to 330p/kg. Hill bred light weights hoggs were 280p/kg to 310p/kg.

CULL SHEEP

After a fast and competitive sale of cull sheep, all vendors left the site feeling “ewe”phoric . The strongest ewes were regularly sailing past £200, topping at £236 on two occasions for pens of Texel cross from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth with others to £228 from RM Gornall, Forton. Endless pens closely following at £185 to £200. Mules sold to a top of £182 again from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth with others to £180 from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham, £178 from P Metcalfe, Quernmore and £174 from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel. Medium Mules and first cross ewes were regularly £145 to £160, with the lighter weight leaners sorts £110 to £125. Several pens of pure hill ewes forward saw medium Swaledales to £92 from T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale. All ewes forward today averaged £156.56.
Just a handful of cull rams sold to £180 from P Prickett, Hutton Roof, with others generally £140 to £160.
