Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Auction Mart Sale of Calves, OTM and Store Cattle, Friday 2nd February 2024.

STORE CATTLE

Another fast trade was seen for store cattle, with all classes and types well ahead of sales earlier in the week. Customers are encouraged to enter cattle with confidence and take advantage of the good trade.
Steers sold to a top of £1860 on two occasions for a Beef Shorthorn cross from EW&CR Clegg, Stalmine and a Charolais cross from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland. Limousins sold to £1800 from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham. Charolais cross sold to £1770 from GT&CA Blezard, Conder Green who also sold British Blue cross at £1720. Aberdeen Angus steers sold to £1660 from J Tattersall, Leyland with others at £1640 from WJ&L Barker, Arkholme and R Escolme, Bay Horse. Herefords sold to £1590 from D Fox & Co, Bay House. Dairy bred steers sold to £1480 for a Holstein Friesian from M Whitton, Burneside with Fleckvieh to £1260 from C&B Cumming & Son, Preesall and British Friesian to £1240 from EE Thornton, Heaton.
Heifers sold to £1600 for a Limousin cross from R&DM Rossall & Sons, Pilling with Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £1590 from MJ Shepherd, Kirkby Lonsdale. British Blue cross sold to £1570 and Charolais to £1540, with other pens of stronger heifers regularly £1360 to £1480. Younger heifers sold to £1250 for Beef Shorthorns from JA&ME Mawson, Orton.
The sale commenced with a two year old Charolais breeding bull from S&J France, Over Wyresdale which achieved a final bid of £2100.

CALVES & WEANLINGS

Rearing bull calves sold to £460 for a Charolais cross from JT&B Fox, Quernmore with a large proportion of younger bull calves generally £280 to £330. JT&B Fox, Quernmore also sold an Aberdeen Angus to £330. Stronger reared bull calves sold to £580 from J&G Thornley, Kirkham who sold others at £570 and £540. Twelve week old British Blue cross bulls sold to £510 from JP&C Robson, Garstang. Dairy bulls sold to £145 for a Holstein Friesian from JT&B Fox, Quernmore with others regularly £80 to £120.
Rearing Heifer calves sold to £360 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from the consignment off Tom Barron Farms, Woodplumpton who sold others at £350 and British Blue cross at £335. Other rearing beef heifers were generally £210 to £280. Weaned heifers sold to £535 from J&G Thornley, Kirkham for a Charolais cross, with Beef Shorthorn selling to £555 from SI Porter, Grange Over Sands.
A pair of weaned Hereford cross steers from E Lund & Son, Ingleton achieved £740.

OTM, CULL & PRIME CATTLE

A large show of 157 cull and OTM cattle saw all cows forward average 169p/kg with OTM and clean cattle averaging 241p/kg. Beef cows sold to a top price of 259.5p/kg for a Limousin cross from RHM&S Boyren, Colton who sold others at 249.5p/kg. Better end been cows were regularly 220p/kg to 245p/kg. A keen interest in beef cows suitable for finishing, were generally 185p/kg to 210p/kg. Top grossing was a Limousin from G&P Middleton, Sedbergh achieving £1631, with others at £1629 from Mason & Gardner, Ingleton and £1610 from T&M Halhead, Carnforth. Young dairy cows sold to 219p/kg from Wannops Farm, Morecambe. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows were 180p/kg to 195p/kg, mediums 155p/kg and 170p/kg and leaner parlour types 135p/kg to 145p/kg. Top grossing cow was a Montbeliarde from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel achieving £1460 with Holstein Friesians selling to £1455 from ME&B Mason & Son, Tatham.
OTM heifers sold to 259.5p/kg for a Limousin from SH&M Batty & Son, Quernmore and M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale, Aberdeen Angus cross from J Oddie & Son, Blackburn and JH Woof & Son, Kendal. Top grossing beef heifer was an Aberdeen Angus achieving £1860 from JH Woof & Son, Kendal. Dairy heifers sold to 234.5p/kg and £1489 from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham.
OTM steers sold to 264.5p/kg and £1399 for a British Blue cross from WT Eastham & Son, Goosnargh.
Cull bulls sold to 269.5p/kg and £1712 for a Limousin from JT&J Kelsall, Clapham with Aberdeen Angus cross selling to 174.5p/kg and £1696 from GR&A Foy, Conder Green.
Several prime heifers forward saw Aberdeen Angus cross sell to 259.5p/kg from J Oddie & Son, Blackburn who sold others to £1557. Dairy heifers sold to 259.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from AW&AM Park & Son, Ellel and £1445 from Wannops Farms, Morecambe.
Prime steers sold to 269.5p/kg for a British Blue from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling with Limousin cross selling to £1957 from DJ Townley, Lancaster.
