PRIME LAMBS & CAST SHEEP
NWA Lancaster held its weekly sale of prime lambs and cull ewes, which saw an increased entry forward in comparison to the equivalent sale last year, with an overall market average of 242p/kg achieved.
The sale peaked at £175 for a heavy weight Texel lamb from GR&RA Surtees, Stodday. Well finished heavy weight lambs continue to attract maximum buyer interest, selling to £129.50 for a ring full of Texel x from C&B Lowther, Over Wyresdale with others at £129 from JE Harrison, Winmarleigh, £127 from KA Purtill, Wigan and P Whitton & Son, Burneside. Others were generally £118 to £125, depending on quality and type. Medum weight lambs sold to £117 for a Texel from AG Butler, Hambleton, with others at £115 from M&C Huddleston, Wray and £114 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Light wight lambs sold to £103 from ME Hughes, Quernmore with others at £100.50 from D Cockett, Ingleton. Hill lambs are starting to come forward in greater numbers with Mules selling to £108 from JA Ellershaw, Carnforth and Cheviots to £97 from R Doran, Winmarleigh.
Todays sale peaked at 295p/kg for a Texel from M&C Huddleston, Wray with other well bred lambs generally 260p/kg to 275p/kg. Well finished first cross lambs were generally 245p/kg to 260p/kg, depending on weight and finish. The leaner lambs were a more selective trade, generally 215p/kg to 230p/kg.
100 cull sheep were forward today which sold to £140 for a Blue Texel ewe from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe. Texel x ewes sold to £126 from GR&RA Surtees, Stodday with others at £123 from RW&FJ Rhodes & Son, Quernmore and £122 form PF Lee, Over Wyresdale. Medium ewes attracted keen interest, selling to £110 for a Texel x from JE Harrison, Winmarleigh and Mules selling to £100 from RW&FJ Rhodes & Son, Quernmore with others also achieving £100 from HJ&BE Kelsall, Gressingham. Other medium Mules were generally £85 to £95. Hill ewes sold to £107 for Cheviots from R Doran, Winmarleigh with other at £104 from KA Purtill, Wigan.
