The concluding sale of 2023 saw all vendors leave full of Christmas cheer, with prices exceeding expectations and many other local auction marts.
CALVES & WEANLINGS
Calves sold to a top of £555 for a ten week old Hereford cross from TE&M Kidd, Ellel who sold others at £520. Younger rearing calves sold to £245 for British Blue cross from C&J Smith, St Michaels. Three week sold Limousins sold to £200 from D&K Haworth, Hambleton with Aberdeen Angus cross achieved £170 from Cote Farm Partnership, Nether Kellet. Dairy bulls sold to £110 for a Holstein Friesian from AE&A Swale, Rishton.
Heifer calves sold to £430 for a Hereford cross from TE&M Kidd, Ellel with ten week old Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £410 from AE&A Swale, Rishton. Younger heifers sold to £220 for Aberdeen Angus cross from C&J Smith, St Michaels who sold other at £210. Three week old British Blue cross sold to £205 from Cote Farm Partnership, Nether Kellet.
Five month old British Blue cross bulls from FW Rhodes & Son, Ellel sold to £760 with others at £720 and heifers at £580.
DAIRY CATTLE
R&K Jenkinson, Pilling sold new calved Holstein Friesian heifers to £1500 with others at £1480 for Fleckvieh cross.
STORE CATTLE
Store cattle sold to top price of £1780 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus cross steers from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling with other Aberdeen Angus cross at £1670 from J&JM Walmsley, Pilling. A ring full of Aberdeen Angus sold to £1640 from G Sagar & Sons, Caton with others at £1620 from WJ&L Barker, Arkholme. Limousin cross steers sold to £1670 from AG Stafford, Out Rawcliffe with British Blue cross achieving £1650 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet. Charolais steers sold to £1580 from H Hesketh & Sons, Longton. Dairy bred steers sold to £1580 for a Montbeliarde from WG&RG Riley, Chorley and Fleckviehs to £1550 from AG Stafford, Out Rawcliffe. Other strong steers were regularly £1400 to £1550. Younger steers saw sixteen month old British Blue cross sell to £1320 from TH Wensley, Kirkham with Simmental cross to £1280 from MJ&LC Lund, Quernmore and Aberdeen Angus to £1280 from Ballacutchel Farms, IOM.
The monthly sale of stirks saw six month old Aberdeen Angus steers sell to £930 from JW Thwaites, Tebay with a six month old Charolais cross steers from Ballavair Farm, IOM selling to £790. British Blue cross steers at 6 month old sold to £720 from JE Catterall & Family, Great Eccleston with six month old Galloway steers selling to £640 from Ballacutchel Farms, IOM.
Heifers sold to £1660 for a pair of Aberdeen cross from MJ Shepherd & Sons, Pilling with a ring full from G Sagar & Sons, Caton selling at £1570. British Blue heifers sold to £1560 with others at £1530 from J&JM Walmsley, Pilling and SH& LE Birkett, Nether Kellet. Other strong heifers were regularly £1330 to £1500.
Sixteen month old Limousin cross heifers from H&A Stephenson, Tunstall sold to £1340, who sold other at £1270. Younger heifer were regularly £1100 to £1250.
Heifer stirks sold to £920 for Blonde cross from SJ&NS Wood, Windermere with Simmental cross to £890 from Ballacutchel Farms, IOM. Aberdeen Angus cross sold to £780 from JK&BJ Birkett, Morecambe and six month old Charolais cross to £770 from Ballavair Farm, IOM.
OTM / CULL CATTLE
114 cull cows sold to a market average of 151p/kg, for an entry of predominately dairy cows. Of the few beef cows forward, a top price of 219.5p/kg or £1558 was achieved for a Bazadaise from BD&PM Gill & Son, Ingleton. Limousin cross sold to 199.5p/kg from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof and £1446 from JC Hodgson, Dent. Other beef cows were regularly 165p/kg to 180p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 177p/kg for a British Friesian from WT Whitaker & Son, Nether Kellet with Fleckvieh to 171p/kg from EW&R Towers, Hornby and Holstein Friesian sold to 169.5p/kg from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham and WG&R Riley, Chorley. Medium dairy cows were regularly 140p/kg to 155p/kg, with leaner parlour sorts 120p/kg to 140p/kg, the very smallest and leanest were less. Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian from R&E Ladds, Kendal achieving £1438. Other heavy well fleshed dairy cows were regularly £1100 to £1200.
OTM beef heifers sold to 254p/kg for a British Blue cross from GB&EA Metcalfe & Son, Kirkby Lonsdale with Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £1453 from R&D Kellet, Cockerham. Dairy heifers sold to 234.5p/kg and £1364 from JM&HM France & Son, Littledale. Others were regularly 180p/kg to 200p/kg.
Steers sold to 239.5p/kg and £1183 for a Hereford cross from Ballacutchel Farms, IOM.
