Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Calves, OTM and Store Cattle - Friday 8th April 2022

Calves & Weanlings
A small entry of calves and weanlings forward today saw British Blue bull calves peak at £340 from H&C Pickervance, Kirkham with British Blue heifers from the same home selling to £260. Friesian bull calves sold to £120 and £100 from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham. A consignment of weanlings from Ross Greenwood, Carlton saw British Blue bulls to £720 and £640 with British Blue heifers from the same home to £530 and £525. Montbeliarde bulls sold to £550 with Friesians to £400. Aberdeen Angus bulls from A&L Gardner, Quernmore sold to £670 and heifers to £460.
Next weeks sale includes an entry of 20 Aberdeen Angus bull and heifer calves at 6-8 week old.

Store cattle
Store cattle prices take another spring forward with short keep cattle rattling on to some trade! Leading the way at £1670 was a pen of four Aberdeen Angus bullocks from TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling. Other Aberdeen Angus bullocks sold to £1580 from J Tattersall, Leyland. Continental bullocks peaked at £1640 for a Simmental from JA&SM Allen, Windermere. A pair of Charolais bullocks sold to £1580 from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet. A pen of three Limousin bullocks to £1580 from JM&A Wallbank & Son, Wray, who continued to enjoy a good day at Lancaster selling a pen of four Aberdeen Angus bullocks to £1490. British Blue bullocks sold to £1520 from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham. Plenty of beef bred bullocks regularly sold in excess of £1400. Dairy bullocks saw Montbeliarde and Fleckviehs sell to £1500 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse who also sold Holstein Friesians to £1400. This was closely followed by other Holstein Friesians to £1390 from EJ Hodgson & Son, Kendal with Brown Swish Bullocks from the same home selling to £1340. All store bullocks forward today averaged £1234.
The heifer trade today topped at £1400 for British Blue’s from JB Moore, Allithwaite. Simmental heifers sold to £1380 for a pen of three from EJ Burrow, Milnthorpe. Aberdeen Angus heifers peaked at £1360 from JM&A Wallbank & Sons, Wray.

Cast / OTM Cattle
Records are smashed in the Lancaster cast cattle ring as a pure Charolais cow sells to an impressive £2340 or 229.5p/kg at 1020kg from T&P Metcalfe, Old Park Side, Caton with another Charolais cow from the same home selling to £2161 or 221.5p/kg weighing 976kg. Pure Luing cows sold to £1855 or 214.5p/kg from D&J&A Freeman, Windermere with others from the same home to 219.5p/kg or £1558. Simmental cows sold to £1676 from Barlow Bros, Crosston. The trade for dairy cattle continues to be astronomical, Fleckvieh cows peaked at £1738 from B&AC Barnes, Middleton with Holstein Friesian cows to £1679 from Lawsons Dairy Ltd, Cockerham, £1676 from MD Close & Son, Arkholme, £1676 from MS&G Mason, Kirkby Lonsdale, £1636 form DJ Clarke Farming, Barnacre and £1575 from P&M Crackles, Burrow with many more selling in excess of £1500. OTM heifers today peaked at 249.5p/kg from a Limousin from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet with Limousin heifers peaking at £1533 from J&J Huck, Burneside. OTM Black and White heifers peaked at 229.5p/kg or £1652 from J&M Robinson, Over Kellet with other dairy heifers to 229.5p/kg or £1565 and £1480 from R&A Jolley, Cabus. The trade today saw well fleshed dairy cows selling between 200-210p/kg, with an overall market averaged of 189.5p/kg for the 117 forward.
