Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Store Cattle, Friday 14th May 2021

CALVES AND STIRKS

The Lancaster calf trade was hot once again, with a good entry of 88 forward meaning plenty of demand. It was a six-week-old Angus bull calf that topped the market this week, selling to £440 from AJ & AJ Gibbons, St Michaels on Wyre. Other Angus bull calves sold to £405 from TL Baldwin & Son, Forton.

British Blue bulls sold to £425 and £410 from J & A Sheerin, Quernmore with other British Blues to £425 from RT Halhead, Cockerham. The heifer calf trade peaked at £400 for a British Blue from J & A Sheerin, Quernmore with other British Blue heifers to £390 from AJ & AJ Gibbons, St Michaels-on-Wyre. Limousin heifer calves sold to £390 from W Crook, Out Rawcliffe. Hereford bull calves sold to £350 from J & CH & JG Bland, with Hereford heifers selling to £330 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Beef calves easily sold in excess of the £300 mark today, with British Blue bull calves averaging £361 and Angus bull calves £306. British Blue heifers averaged £343.

Black and White bull calves from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale sold to £245, £230 and £220, with others to £190 and £175 from T & CN Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. Black and Whites sold to an overall market average of £153.46.

Lancaster held its mid Monthly sale of stirks that saw an improved trade from the previous sale, as grass begins to grow and plenty of good growing type of stirks on offer which buyers are looking for. A Fleckvieh bull topped the market at £1060 from O & H Melling, Kirkham. The bullock trade topped at £880 for seven, eight month old Herefords and Limousins from PJ Holt & Sons, Blackpool with others from the same home achieving £835. Limousin bullocks sold to £860 and £840 from WJ & E Woodhouse, Nateby. Angus bullocks sold to £830 from JR & J Gorst, Quernmore, with British Blues topping at £810 from P Rossall, Claughton-on-Brock. A run of five to six-month-old suckler bred heifers from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead caught the eye of many with their style and shape, they twice topped at £790 for a pair and an individual, followed by another pair to £780. Other Limousin heifers sold to £790 from WJ & E Woodhouse, Nateby. Angus heifers peaked at £760 from G & D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston. Yearling Black and White bullocks topped at £730 from J Savage, Withnell.

The next stirk sale will be on Friday the 28th May, with demand remaining strong.

STORE CATTLE

Reports from other markets say that the trade has dropped for store cattle but Lancaster defied this with no drop in the trade and with more buyers ring side looking to purchases the 239 cattle forward.

A great consignment from JA & LR Wilson, Millom led the way in Lancaster today selling Limousin bullocks to £1680 and £1550 followed by a Charolais bullock to £1500. The consignment from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse sold South Devons to £1490, a pair of Herefords to £1460, with Charolais and Angus bullocks from the same home also achieving £1460. To top off a good day for the Prest family, their Shorthorn bullocks sold to £1400 and British Blues to £1380. A pair of Angus bullocks sold to £1450 from J Tattersall, Leyland followed by another pair of Angus bullocks to £1390 from H Hesketh & Sons, Longton. This was followed by another pair of Angus bullocks which sold to £1380 from MS & G Mason, Kirby Lonsdale. A trio of Simmental bullocks sold to £1370 from EJ Burrow, Storth. Plenty more bullocks today sold into the region of £1300.

The heifer trade topped at £1360 for a British Blue from M Shepard & Son, Pilling. A pair of Angus heifers topped at £1260 from J & MM Cliffe, Forton, with other Angus heifers to £1250 from M S & G Mason, Kirby Lonsdale. Limousin heifers topped at £1220 for a pen of four for WA Hodgson, Whinfell.

Dairy bullocks sold to a top of £1200 for black and whites from J & R Waller, Killington. Montbeliarde bulls sold to £1120 for a pen for four from WR & CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh. Black and White feeding heifers sold to £1110 from Kelsall & Wood, Scotforth.

OTM CATTLE

The trade for the OTM cattle remains very buoyant and firm with another impressive market average of 153p/kg for the 104 sold today. The consignment of OTM heifers from T Foley, Edgeworth sold British Blues to 217.5p/kg and 209.5p/kg with Aberdeen Angus’ selling to 204.5p/kg from the same home. Plenty of OTM beef feeding heifers selling between 185-200p/kg. Black and white feeding heifers twice sold to 187.5p/kg from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel and RW Bainbridge & Son, Whittington, with Ayrshires selling to 184.5p/kg from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton. Black and White feeding heifers topped at £1174 from W & S Airey, Whittington.

Beef cows sold to a top 187.5 p/kg from F & JM Mason, Kirby Lonsdale. This was followed by Luings to 181.5p/kg from S Mawson & Son, Orton with Blondes achieving the same price from MJ Whitworth, Bolton-le-Sands. Beef cows sold to a top of £1437 for a Limousin from L Atkinson, New Hutton, with Luing cows selling to £1324 and £1289 from S Mawson & Son.

Best Black and White dairy cows sold in excess of 160p/kg twice peaking at 169.5 p/kg from RE & P Miller, Barnacre and B Buttterfield & Son, Burton in Kendal. Dairy cows topped at £1222 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale followed by £1218 from RE & P Miller, Barnacre, with plenty more cows selling easily in excess of the £1100 mark.

Cast bulls sold to a top of 209.5 p/kg or 1822 from F & JM Mason, Kirkby Lonsdale with Hereford bulls selling to £1373 from J Cooper, Penwortham.
