Calves and Stirks

The opening sale of Calves of 2021 had an entry of 115, with plenty of optimism in the beef industry the calves were met with plenty of demand. Topping the market this week was a Limousin weanling heifer from GJ Dugdale, Barton selling to £500.

Beef bull calves of all sizes were eagerly bid for. Leading the way at £475 was a British Blue bull calf from G & ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel with others from the same home to £435. This was closely followed by £470 from David and Eileen Wallbank, Over Wyresdale with a British Blue bull calf, with other British Blue bull calves to £430 and £420 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. All British Blue bulls averaged £348. Angus bull calves peaked at £460 and £455 from J & G Thornley, Roseacre, with others to £405 from Karen Parkinson, Out Rawcliffe, with plenty of good conformation beef bull calves selling around the four hundred mark.

British Blue heifers sold to a top of £395 from JT & B Fox, Quernmore with others selling to £365 from JP & C Robson, Garstang, with better beef heifer calves often sold in excess of the three hundred pound mark. Native heifer calves were a slightly easier trade today. Black and white weanlings topped at £225 from RE & P Miller, Barnacre with all black and whites forward averaging £93.47.

Store Cattle

The first sale of store cattle of the year saw the weather outside frosty and snowy but the trade inside was scorching hot. Some striking averages for bullocks were £1158 and heifers £1083.

A suckler bred Limousin bullock led the way selling to £1500 from JA & LR Wilson, Millom with others selling to £1410. The consignment from Garlic’s of Freckleton sold Charolais and Limousin bullocks to £1480. The consignment of Limousin bullocks from PM & ST Entwistle, Abbeystead sold to £1440 and £1420 with Charolais bullocks from H Chapman & Son, Middleton selling to £1430 and £1410.

Native bullocks sold to a top of £1400 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens for Angus with others selling to £1350 from KH & D Holden & Son, Pilling and J Hesketh, Hutton with plenty more selling around the £1300 mark. Dairy bullocks topped at £1300 for Montbeliarde also from T & E Garlic & Son, Freckleton. Black and white bullocks topped at £1170 from L Parsons and Sons, Levens.

The heifer trade peaked at £1250 from J & JM Walmsley, Pilling with a Limousin, with Angus heifers from the same home selling to £1200. Other heifers sold to £1200 for British Blues from FI & ME Little, Barrows Green and £1200 for Angus heifers from L Parsons and Sons, Levens.

Cast Cows and OTM Cattle

Lancaster had over 100 cast cows and OTM cattle forward selling to an impressive market average of 130p/kg. Lancaster continues to boast an impressive number of buyers and more cattle are required each week. OTM black and white heifers sold to 169.5p/kg twice from KE Robinson, Farleton and H Wright & Son, Kendal. These peaked at £1169 from H Wright & Son. Limousin cast cows sold to a top of 167.5p/kg or £1209 from M & C Greenwood, Middleton and 164.5p/kg or £1189 from ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth. Best dairy cows sold in excess of 140p/kg regularly topping at £1221 from JH Towers and Son, Tunstall with others selling to £1173 from J Bargh and Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe.

Cast bulls sold to a top of £1293 from Low Moor Howe, Windermere.
