Calves and Stirks

The weekly sale of Calves enjoyed a strong trade throughout, a couple of fresh faces ringside kept the trade buoyant. The consignment from J & G Thornley, Roseacre sold British Blue bulls to £470, £450, £430 and Angus bull calves from the same home selling to £425. British Blue heifer calves sold to £425 from GJ Dugdale, Barton with others selling to £405 from the Walmsley family, Cockerham. Other Angus bull calves sold to £395 from David and Eileen Wallbank, Abbeystead. Plenty of strong beef calves selling in the mid to late three hundreds. Stronger native heifer calves a sharper trade selling to a top of £275 for Angus’ from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with others to £255 from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham. Black and white calves a sharper trade, the consignment from David and Eileen Wallbank, Abbeystead selling to £205, £195 and £188. Good rearing calves regularly selling one hundred pound plus. New Zealand type grazing bull calves sold to £28.

Monthly Sale of Stirks

The monthly sale of Stirks enjoyed a buoyant trade for all types on offer. The entry of 140 attracted once again fresh buyers ringside, more cattle are required each month. Top spot this month was £910 for 9 month old Angus bullocks from CM & CA Jackson, Caton with others from MB Flatman & Son, Over Wyresdale selling to £890. Hereford bullocks at 10month old sold to £880 from J Cooper, Penwortham. Limousin bullock’s suckler bred at 9month old sold to £880 from MJ Whitworth, Bolton le Sands. The consignment of Angus yearlings from G Metcalfe & Son, Gressingham sold bullocks to £880 and £860 with a pen of five heifers to £835. Plenty of good yearling bullocks selling in excess of the eight hundred mark. Suckler bred Limousin heifers at 9-10month old from Alan Thompson, Carnforth sold to £840. The bull trade saw 11 month old British Blues sell to a top of £820 from AE & PC Capstick, Heversham. Yearling black and white bullocks sold to £660 from GI & M Faraday, Bleasdale.

Store Cattle

The trade for Store Cattle continues to be strong at Lancaster with a larger entry forward today in which more each week can easily be handled to the advantage of vendors. All cattle forward averaged £1082. The short term strong cattle in big demand and eagerly bid for. Trade twice peaked at £1490 firstly for a Limousin from JA & LR Wilson, Millom who sold another to £1380. Then again at £1490 for a Charolais from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe who also sold Limousin’s to £1320. Angus bullocks sold to a top of £1400 from EJ Ward and Sons, Nether Kellet. Other noted prices for Angus bullocks were £1290 from J Tattersall, Leyland followed by £1280 from TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling and J Hesketh, Hutton. The heifer trade peaked twice at £1240 for Charolais heifers from EJ Ward and Sons, Nether Kellet and British Blues from WA Hodgson, Whinfell. Dairy bullocks sold to a top of £1210 from T & E Garlick & Son, Freckleton who sold Montbeliardes to £1190. Other black and white bullocks sold to £1200 from L Parsons & Son, Low Levens.
Cast Cows and OTM Cattle.
The cast cow trade continues to get better and better. This week’s average was an impressive 139p/kg for 85 forward. More are required to fulfil the busy ring of buyers at Lancaster. We recommend to vendors in the current strong trade, not to carry any passengers, ‘cash them in’ whilst the trade is here. Limousin OTM steers sold to 209.5p/kg from WA Hodgson, Whinfell. OTM heifers sold 204.5p/kg or £1325 from H Morgan, Stalmine with Simmentals from the same home selling to £1328. OTM dairy heifers sold to 184.5p/kg from PA & D Slater, Barnacre or £1237 from H Wright & Son, Helsington. Limousin cows sold to a top of 177.5p/kg from A & P Hodgkinson, Stalmine grossing an impressive £1508. Best fleshed dairy cows regularly selling in the region of 150p/kg. They sold to a top of £1268 from J & M Robinson, Over Kellet; £1262 from AW & AM Park, Ellel; £1212 from TL Baldwin & Son, Forton and £1184 from WN & D Smith, Cockerham. There was an impressive eighteen dairy cows selling in excess of the £1100 mark.
