Calves and Stirks

The weekly sale of calves at Lancaster enjoyed a good trade for all specifications with native heifers a sharper trade this week. The trade topped twice at £390 for a Charolais bull calf from JE & S Seedall, Mellor and a British Blue bull from J & G Thornley, Kirkham. Angus bull calves selling to £380 from Karen Parkinson, Out Rawcliffe with other British Blues selling to £380 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel. Strong bull calves selling in the mid three hundreds. Heifer calves sold to £320 and £310 from J & G Thornley, Roseacre. Black and white bull calves twice sold to £135 from WN & D Smith, Cockerham.

Store Cattle

Lancaster enjoyed another strong trade for all classes and ages of store cattle with purchasers for short keep cattle and buyers also planning a head looking for grazing type cattle as well. A great Charolais bullock from H Chapman and Son, Middleton lead the way selling to £1420. Other Charolais bullocks sold to £1360 from WA Hodgson, Whinfell. Angus bullocks sold to £1370 and £1360 from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Plenty of bullocks sold around the thirteen hundred pound mark once again. British Blues leading the heifer trade selling to £1220 from SH & LE Birkett, Nether Kellet.

Cast Cows and OTM Cattle.

There was a strong overall market average of 138p/kg for all cattle forward, one of the best in the area. OTM heifers and bullocks always meet huge demand at Lancaster, the best ones regularly sold in the region of 200p/kg and beyond. A top price of 209.5p/kg was achieved three times. Firstly by Wallbank Farms, Abbeystead selling an Angus heifer and steer, grossing £1324 and £1265 and an Angus steer from EE Thornton and Son, Overton, grossing £1252. Limousin steers peaked at £1331 from S Barton, Radcliffe with black and white bullocks from the same home selling to £1297.
Cast bulls topped the market this week selling to £1642 for a Limousin from J & J Whaley, Hawes and £1459 for an Angus from Lawson Farms, Cockerham. Black and white bulls sold to a top of £1257 from H & SD Cornthwaite and Son, Nateby.
Well fleshed beef cows sold in excess of the 160p/kg mark, best dairy cows easily selling in excess of the 150p/kg mark. Dairy cows sold to a top of £1280 from AW & AM Park and Sons, Ellel with others selling to £1205 from TL Baldwin and Son, Forton.
